On May 20, 2024 local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Astana.
Wang Yi said that President Putin's first state visit to China in the new term was a complete success, and the two heads of state based on the important juncture of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, jointly grasped the direction of the development of bilateral relations in the new era, jointly issued a heavyweight joint statement on deepening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in the new era, and issued a common voice to strengthen China-Russia strategic cooperation under the new situation, demonstrating the responsibility of major countries committed to maintaining global strategic stability. China is ready to work with Russia to implement a series of new and important consensus reached by the two heads of state around the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, so as to push China-Russia relations to a new level.
Wang Yi said that the two sides should make good preparations for bilateral exchanges within the year, continue to increase mutual support, stabilize the basic situation of cooperation, and maintain the security and stability of the common neighborhood between China and Russia. Today, the so-called "inauguration ceremony" was held in the Taiwan region. What needs to be pointed out is that no matter how the situation on the island of Taiwan changes, it cannot change the ironclad fact that Taiwan is a part of China, nor can it obstruct the general historical trend that China will eventually and will inevitably be reunified. In his speech after his victory, President Putin particularly emphasized that Taiwan is a part of China, and China highly appreciates this. We believe that Russia will continue to give China firm support on issues concerning China's core interests.
Wang Yi pointed out that under the current situation, a SCO with close unity and win-win cooperation not only serves the common interests of all member states, but also conforms to the trend of the times of a multipolar world. China is ready to work closely with Russia and other member states to stabilize the direction of the SCO, jointly safeguard regional security, stability and development, and promote a more just and equitable development of global governance.
Lavrov said that President Putin's visit to China shortly after his re-election fully demonstrated the particularity and importance of the Russian-Chinese partnership, and thanked the Chinese friends for making thoughtful arrangements for President Putin's visit to China. The joint statement issued by the two heads of state raised Russian-Chinese relations to a new height and clarified new tasks for us. Russia is ready to work with China to maintain exchanges at all levels, promote cooperation in various fields, and implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state. On the Taiwan issue, Russia supports China's realization of national reunification, and this position is very clear. The Global Security Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping is of great significance to safeguarding world peace, and Russia is ready to actively explore practical measures with China to implement this important initiative.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern, such as the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis, and the Korean Peninsula.
