BMW's internal documents exposed! The new X5, rushing to Huawei to ask the M9?

The BMW X5 has been one of the best-selling models among high-end mid- and large-sized SUVs. However, in recent years, the limelight of this car has been stolen a lot of limelight by medium and large SUVs under brands such as Wenjie and Ideal.

BMW recently decided to go big and produce a new X5 in China.

1. Update the production line and spend tens of billions of dollars only for batteries

According to a recent internal document, BMW Brilliance Supply Chain will revamp the battery case production line for the next-generation iX5.

It is expected that this transformation will last for 32 months, with a total investment of up to 10 billion. Among them, the renovation of the production line is aimed at BMW Brilliance's previous two production lines for the iX3, which cost more than 200 million yuan. The next-generation iX5 is also expected to be mass-produced on both lines.

The reason for this is to adapt to the new E/E architecture that will be used in the iX5 in the future, as well as the sixth-generation eDrive electric drive system and the new generation of lithium-ion batteries.

It is expected that the new iX5 will use an 800V architecture, but judging from its parameters, this battery from BMW does not seem to be too powerful.

2. 300 kilometers of charging in 10 minutes, the pure electric iX5 is not attractive enough

It is expected that the BMW iX5's battery system will be able to charge 300 kilometers in 10 minutes. However, the battery won't be available on the newly produced iX5 until 2026.

Not to mention 2026, there are many models that can reach this level even now. SAIC Zhiji's LS6 can charge for 350 kilometers in 10 minutes; ZEEKR 007 can be charged for 5 minutes to replenish energy for 240 kilometers; Chery Star Era ES can increase the range by 218 kilometers after 5 minutes of charging.

And judging from the current pure electric models under BMW, their range level is generally lower than that of domestic new energy vehicles. At that time, the BMW iX5 may also be difficult to have a range advantage.

Therefore, the all-electric iX5 may not be attractive enough for consumers. Judging from BMW's plan for new energy vehicles, it may be difficult for their top management to accept the extended range power. And more importantly, the design of the iX5 is likely to cause a lot of controversy

3. The nostrils of the huge kidneys are narrowed, and the appearance of the BMW iX5 may be overhauled

In March 2024, BMW officially announced that it would produce the new generation of BMW models in China in 2026. This bombshell news made many BMW fans unhappy, just because the exterior design of this model is really difficult to appreciate.

The front face of this new-generation BMW model is not stunning, but it definitely deserves the word "bold". BMW's traditional kidney shape has been changed to a pair of narrow nostrils. The angular lines and headlights give a sharp and mechanical visual effect.

Although this shape is very groundbreaking, it is far from the restrained and conservative aesthetic preferences of Chinese. Combined with the timing of the completion of BMW Brilliance's remodeled production line in 2026, this "new generation model of domestically produced BMW" is likely to be the future iX5.

If that's the case, and not to mention whether the iX5 will use plug-in hybrid or range-extender power, I'm afraid it's unlikely that this avant-garde styling will have much of an audience. BMW, which has previously planted its heels in the styling of the new 7 Series and the new 5 Series, may need to consider changing the "BMW New Generation Styling" to cater to the Chinese public aesthetic if it does not want to continue to sell on the street because of its appearance.
