During the War of Liberation, Fu Dongju, the daughter of Fu Zuoyi, commander of the Kuomintang "North China Suppression Commander-in-Chief", was an underground member of our party and made great contributions to the peaceful liberation of Beiping in 1949. In the first half of the Pingjin Campaign, our army in the Northeast and North China joined forces, and the million-strong army won successive battles on the eastern and western fronts, and surrounded the 300,000 Kuomintang troops in Beiping, and it was only a matter of time before Fu Zuoyi was defeated. However, whether Fu Zuoyi can "understand the current affairs" and revolt and surrender is related to the safety of the lives of the people of Beiping and the safety of the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, which is a major matter.
Fu Dongju officially joined the party organization in 1947, and was not originally in Beiping, but worked in the Tianjin "Ta Kung Pao" agency. During the Liaoshen Campaign in 48, the war situation in the north was increasingly favorable to our side, and our army was about to liberate North China in the next step. Fu Dongju had a firm revolutionary stance, and paid attention to working methods, and made a good balance between faith and family affection, she imperceptibly influenced Fu Zuoyi, hoping that her father would make up his mind to revolt. Obviously, Fu Dongju's role is special and crucial.
Fu Zuoyi is actually aware of his daughter's thoughts, words and deeds. But according to Fu Dongju's later recollection: When my father was alive, he never asked me in person whether I was a member of the Communist Party of China. Fu Zuoyi, as a general of the national army with heavy troops, naturally has his channels, but he is unwilling to reveal Fu Dongju's identity, which is also a kind of protection and respect for his daughter.
As far as objective military strength is concerned, Fu Zuoyi can be fought or surrendered. After all, the Kuomintang army also has hundreds of thousands of troops, and relying on the strong city defense of Beiping, the military and civilian losses are very heavy in the real fight. During the entire Pingjin Campaign, Fu Zuoyi had a great psychological burden, not because he was not clear about the direction of the war, but mainly because he was worried that he would be "held accountable" by our side after the uprising, become a prisoner, and even face danger to his life.
With the "wind in the ears" of his daughter Fu Dongju and the advancement of the secret negotiation process, Fu Zuoyi not only felt the tremendous military pressure, but also had trust and longing for our party's policy, and finally signed a peaceful liberation agreement and ordered his troops to go out of the city for reorganization. Beiping, the thousand-year-old capital, has been preserved by millions of people and precious ancient books. Although the solution of the Beiping problem is not the credit of Comrade Fu Dongju alone, she is in a key position and her role cannot be replaced.
In addition to his contribution to the country and the people, Fu Dongju's approach objectively also protected his father. Fu Zuoyi did not go further and further on the wrong path: if the Beiping War had started that year, Fu Zuoyi would have been either captured or killed in battle, and the ending would not have been good. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Fu Zuoyi, as the general of the uprising, became the first Minister of Water Resources of New China, retaining a high position of power, which is very ideal.
It is a little regrettable that the relationship between the father and daughter is not as close as before the founding of the People's Republic of China, and there is a certain estrangement. In fact, this is also human nature, when Fu Zuoyi served in the Kuomintang camp, his daughter chose another path, which was actually more dangerous for both of them. Although Fu Dongju's choice was ultimately proved to be correct, as a party, there will still be some awkwardness emotionally.
Fu Dongju's purpose in participating in the revolution was very simple, not to get promoted and make a fortune and seek a future. According to her academic qualifications, background, and actual contributions, she could have held a certain position in the new government, but she did not really "enter politics", but worked as an ordinary editor in the newspaper, and only became the deputy director of the editorial department of the Hong Kong branch of the Xinhua News Agency many years later, which was mainly a personal wish. Fu Dongju has great righteousness in her heart, and she has lived a very low-key life, but it is extraordinary.
