In November 1946, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) was founded in Paris, France. In June 1974, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) held its 11th session in Copenhagen, Denmark, and defined a museum as "an open and permanent institution that does not pursue profit and serves the development of society and society." It has made it its fundamental duty to collect, preserve and study testimonies of human beings and their environment in order to exhibit them, to make them available to the public, and to provide opportunities for learning, education and appreciation".
In order to promote the healthy development of museums worldwide and to attract the understanding, participation and interest of the general public in museums, the 1977 International Council of Museums General Assembly adopted a resolution establishing an annual event "with the aim of further unifying the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and attracting the attention of the world public to their activities." The International Council of Museums (ICOM) has announced to the world that since 1977, 18 May has been designated as International Museum Day, with the aim of conveying that "museums are an important means of cultural exchange, cultural enrichment and the development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples".
Since then, on this day every year, museums around the world will hold a variety of publicity and commemorative activities to attract people to museums, so as to enhance the public's understanding of museums and better play the social education function of museums.
