On May 17, witnessed by more than 300 bird research experts and bird-watching enthusiasts from all over the world, the "2024 Wawushan First International Birdwatching Season" kicked off at Shushan Square in Wawushan Scenic Area, Hongya County, Meishan City.
In the afternoon of the same day, the "International Bird Watching Competition", one of the activities of the "2024 Wawushan First International Bird Watching Season", officially kicked off. 32 teams from all over the world will compete against each other over the course of three days.
How does bird watching compete? According to the relevant person in charge of the organizing committee, the participating teams will make full use of their professional knowledge and observation skills to strive to identify and record as many bird species as possible; The judges selected the winners based on factors such as the number of birds observed, the species, the behavior, and the quality of the photos taken.
With its abundant bird population and unique natural environment, Wawu Mountain has become a world-famous bird watching base and one of the top ten bird watching resorts in Sichuan. According to statistics, there are 309 species of wild birds in 170 genera and 18 orders, 62 families, accounting for 41% of the birds in Sichuan Province, including 232 species of Thaiciformes in 41 families, accounting for 75% of the local bird species. In particular, it is one of the areas with the highest concentration of jaw species in China, attracting tens of thousands of bird watching enthusiasts every year, and becoming the famous "hometown of Chinese jays and birds, and an international birdwatching paradise".
The first International Bird Watching Season in Wawu Mountain not only provided a platform for global bird research experts and birdwatching enthusiasts to exchange and learn, but also showed the world the local efforts and achievements in ecological protection.
It is understood that in recent years, Hongya County, where Wawu Mountain is located, has adhered to a blueprint to the end, and the concept of ecological priority and green development has run through the whole process and all aspects of the county's ecological civilization construction. Persist in carrying out ecological restoration, forcefully close 14 mining enterprises and 46 small hydropower stations in protected areas, and restore all ecological vegetation. To maintain biodiversity, there are 2,753 species of animals and plants in the county, and the number of rare wild animals has increased from 11 to 23, and the forest coverage rate of Hongya County has jumped from 49.8% in 1999 to 72.49%. Hongya has become one of the important ecological function areas in the country and one of the 13 priority areas for biodiversity conservation in the province.
