On May 17 this year, nearly a year after the incident, Mr. Liu received the first-instance verdict from the Dongguan Intermediate People's Court. According to the verdict, the defendant Tang Xianghong committed the crime of intentional homicide and was sentenced to death and deprived of political rights for life. In addition, Tang Xianghong was also sentenced to compensate the plaintiffs in the attached civil lawsuit, Liu Changnian and Xu Nanping (i.e., Liu Baomei's parents), for economic losses of 65,462 yuan, and Zheng Limin's husband, parents and other family members 69,462 yuan.

According to the (2023) Yue 19 Xingchu No. 243 Criminal Attached Civil Judgment (hereinafter referred to as the "Judgment") issued by the Dongguan Intermediate People's Court, the Dongguan Municipal People's Procuratorate alleged: On May 24, 2023, Tang Xianghong and his wife Liu Baomei had a quarrel over trivial family matters in Qidong County, Hunan Province, and beat Liu Baomei. Liu Baomei then ran away to her mother's rented residence in Quhai Community, Wanjiang Street, Dongguan City.
On May 27, 2023, Tang Xianghong came from Qidong, Hunan to Dongguan, Guangdong Province to find Liu Baomei to ease their relationship, but Liu Baomei and her family did not accept it and asked for a divorce. During this period, Tang Xianghong tried to save his marriage, but was rejected by Liu Baomei and his family. Tang Xianghong believed that the marriage between them could not be exchanged, so he had the idea of killing Liu Baomei.
The verdict stated that at about 14:00 on May 29, 2023, Tang Xianghong took a fruit knife to his mother's family's rented residence in Quhai Community, Wanjiang Street, Dongguan City. According to Tang Xianghong's confession to the police, at that time, he saw his wife Liu Baomei lying on her side on the bed and brushing Tik Tok, ignoring him. After Tang Xianghong entered the room, he sat on his wife's bed and patted her shoulder with his hand, she was very impatient and shook his hand away. According to Tang Xianghong's confession, at that moment, he completely broke out. Tang Xianghong bent down, unzipped his backpack, took out the fruit knife he had prepared before from the bag, held the fruit knife with his right hand, and stabbed Liu Baomei in the waist with the blade facing down. Seeing this, Liu Baomei came out of the room, she hugged Tang Xianghong's left leg, trying to stop all this from happening, but Tang Xianghong stabbed her on the head again, and she couldn't move anymore.

Tang Xianghong's move directly caused the deaths of 41-year-old Liu Baomei and 27-year-old Zheng Limin. The Dongguan City Intermediate People's Court held that the defendant Tang Xianghong ignored national law and deliberately and unlawfully deprived others of their lives, causing the death of two people, and that his conduct constituted the crime of intentional homicide and should be punished in accordance with law. In addition to criminal liability, it should also bear the corresponding civil liability.
Accordingly, the Dongguan Intermediate People's Court made the judgment mentioned at the beginning of this article, that is, sentencing Tang Xianghong to death, depriving him of political rights for life, and at the same time ordering him to compensate Liu Baomei's parents 65,462 yuan and Zheng Limin's family 69,462 yuan.

According to the verdict, Tang Xianghong and Liu Baomei are both from Qidong, Hunan, and began to live together as husband and wife in 2003, during which they had two sons, and only registered their marriage in August 2019. Since 2015, because of the suspicion that Liu Baomei has an ambiguous relationship with others, the husband and wife have quarreled many times, and Tang Xianghong also has domestic violence against Liu Baomei.
On May 23, 2023, after a quarrel was induced by a hand injury and without the help of his wife when he was dressed, Tang Xianghong beat Liu Baomei. Liu Baomei also reported to the Qidong police that she was beaten by her husband.
Subsequently, Liu Baomei went to Dongguan to join her parents and younger brother's family who were working here. The verdict states that Tang Xianghong's eldest son, Tang Mouhao's transcript, shows, "My father was a kind man, never quarreled with anyone, smiled at anyone, and would lend money to others even if he didn't have (anything) money." Tang Mouhao said that because he thought that his mother Liu Baomei was cheating, eight or nine years ago, his parents often quarreled and fought because of this, but the relationship between the two has been relatively harmonious in the past two years.
"In fact, Tang Mouhao and his brother were brought up by us when they were young." Tang Mouhao's grandmother Xu Nanping told the Red Star News reporter. In the verdict, Peng Mouyuan, secretary of the party branch and director of Tang Xianghong's village, also confirmed this. The testimony provided by Peng Mouyuan also showed that Tang Xianghong's family conditions were not good, but he was honest and enthusiastic, and had a good relationship with the villagers. Therefore, after this incident, "the people of the village were very sympathetic to him".
Tang Mouping, the head of the same village group, also provided testimony to the police, saying that Tang Xianghong was an honest person, and the villagers had a good evaluation of him, believing that he and Liu Baomei also had a good relationship.
