Liang Haoran couldn't have imagined that the "culprit" who once brought him to the brink of death was a small piece of gauze.
In July 2022, 29-year-old Liang Haoran underwent minimally invasive surgery for appendicitis at the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University in Inner Mongolia. However, for more than a year after the operation, he had repeated symptoms such as fever and abdominal pain. It wasn't until October 2023, when he had another surgery, that he learned that there were old yarn strips left in his body.
Later, affected by this, he was transferred to Beijing for multiple surgeries, and was also issued a critical illness notice by the hospital in Beijing...... So far, Liang Haoran's body has not fully recovered.
On May 14, Liang Haoran's family told Jimu News reporters that they would pursue the legal responsibility of the hospital and the doctor concerned through legal means.
On the 15th, the staff of the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University introduced that the family had complained to the relevant departments and taken the judicial route, and the specific matter was inconvenient to disclose to the public.
The staff of the People's Mediation Committee for Medical Disputes in Chifeng City said that the dispute is still being mediated.
The man had abdominal pain and fever several days after appendix surgery
On May 14, Liang Haoran's mother, Ms. Zhang, told Jimu News that on July 13, 2022, 29-year-old Liang Haoran went to the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University in Inner Mongolia for stomach pain, and was diagnosed with acute appendicitis on the same day, so he underwent minimally invasive surgery for appendicitis in the hospital.
On July 18, 2022, Liang Haoran was discharged from the hospital accompanied by his family. According to the discharge record of the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University provided by Ms. Zhang, the patient was diagnosed with "acute appendicitis" after completing relevant auxiliary examinations after admission. The patient was treated with "laparoscopic appendectomy" in the emergency department, and was given anti-inflammatory rehydration for symptomatic treatment after the operation, and the patient recovered well and was discharged from the hospital today.
Soon after being discharged from the hospital, Liang Haoran had intermittent symptoms of fever, but the fever subsided after taking medicine every time. On the evening of August 14, 2022, Liang Haoran had another high fever, and his family was worried that he would burn out his body, so they sent him to the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University for treatment and CT testing. The test report showed that the patient's right lower quadrant was found in the gyocecal part of the right lower quadrant, the appendix was not clearly shown, and the right side of the pelvis was a clump of flaky liquid hypodense shadows...... The density of the surrounding fat space is cloudy, and the cord shadow can be seen, the lesion is not clearly demarcated from the adjacent small intestine, and the mesentery has multiple small lymph nodes. The imaging opinion of the day is: abnormal density shadow on the right side of the pelvis, please combine it with clinical practice.
"We also consulted and understood, minimally invasive surgery has a ligation clip left in the body, and it will be fine after the clip is wrapped in intestinal oil, but the time for each person to be completely wrapped is different, which may cause inflammation, so I listened to the doctor's advice and continued to go home to reduce inflammation." According to Ms. Zhang, Liang Haoran's health is still not good after that, and he will often have abdominal pain and fever. In April 2023, his family also took him to the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University for colon enemas and other examinations, but no clear results were obtained.
Surgery again found that old gauze was left in the body
Until the end of October 2023, Liang Haoran once again developed symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, and intestinal flatulence, and he came to the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University again for treatment, and was hospitalized again for "abdominal abscess". According to the hospital's hospitalization records, Liang Haoran had no previous history of trauma, and his surgical history was only appendicitis surgery performed at the hospital. However, it had been 15 months since he had surgery for appendicitis.
"We always thought it was the influence of the clamp in the receptor, and we thought that if the clip remained in the body, we would suffer this sin, and we might as well have another operation to get the clip out." According to Ms. Zhang, on October 30, 2023, doctors from the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University planned to perform laparoscopic surgery on Liang Haoran, and then switched to open intestinal adhesion release, abdominal foreign body removal and enterostomy surgery.
According to the medical records provided by Ms. Zhang, laparoscopy tried to classify the patient's inflammatory mass in the abdomen, and the intestinal adhesions were severe and difficult to distinguish, so it was decided to switch to laparotomy for treatment...... Layer by layer, the abdomen was cut into the abdomen, the adherent intestinal tube was separated, and an irregular pus was found in the center of the inflammatory mass, in which old gauze mixed granulation tissue and necrotic adipose tissue were seen, and the gauze and abscess necrotic tissue were removed and sent to pathology......
According to another pathological specimen examination report from the hospital provided by Ms. Zhang, the pathological diagnosis was: (abdominal foreign body) sent for gauze tissue examination with acute and chronic inflammation with inflammatory granulation tissue and giant cell reaction; (Abdominal necrotic tissue) acute and chronic inflammation with inflammatory granulation tissue and giant cell reactions.

Ms. Zhang said that all along, they did not know that there was gauze left in Liang Haoran's body, and after the operation, the family did not see the clip left in Liang Haoran's body.
During the operation, due to the severe inflammation in the intestinal tube, the doctor communicated with the family and performed a small enterostomy operation on Liang Haoran.
Ms. Zhang said that after the operation, Liang Haoran still felt abdominal pain, breathlessness, and a high fever. On the second day of surgery, the hospital's daily medical records showed that "the patient was in poor general condition and had intermittent fever after surgery...... Poor intestinal peristalsis in the left mid-quadrant where the pain is severe. "On November 3 and 4, 2023, doctors from the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University performed two puncture and catheter drainage operations on Liang Haoran. However, the family found that the fluid drained was not the right color, so they asked to be transferred to Peking University Third Hospital ("Peking University Third Hospital") for treatment.
On November 7, Liang Haoran was transferred to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University for treatment, and the hospital also issued a critical illness notice to his family that night. On November 8, Liang Haoran underwent pelvic and abdominal irrigation and drainage, partial terminal ileal resection and ileal single-lumen ostomy in the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University. According to the pathology report issued by the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University on the day of surgery, Liang Haoran had three perforated areas in the intestinal wall tissue of the small intestine where he was removed.

Ms. Zhang and her family said that before that, they did not know that Liang Haoran also had intestinal perforation.
The local medical commission has intervened in mediation
On May 15, the reporter contacted the office of the Affiliated Hospital of Chifeng University, and the staff of the hospital said that they did not know about the matter.
Another staff member of the hospital who is responsible for coordinating related matters said that the family has reported the matter to the relevant departments and has begun to take judicial channels to solve it. At the same time, the staff member also said that Liang Haoran had finished treatment.
In April this year, Liang Haoran, accompanied by his family, came to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University again for ostomy return surgery.
Ms. Zhang told the Jimu News reporter that when she had appendicitis surgery in 2022, Liang Haoran had 180 pounds, and now after nearly two years of tossing, Liang Haoran has lost thirty or forty pounds.
Ms. Liang, another relative of Liang Haoran, said that in half a year, Liang Haoran had three laparotomy surgeries, which had a great impact on his physical health, and he has not recovered well until now. In addition, because of his long-term illness, he took long-term sick leave from his employer, and his current income is only a minimum living guarantee.
"He stayed in the ICU alone for many days, and after being discharged from the hospital, he hung a fecal bag for a period of time, and he was also very stressed." Ms. Liang said that in the first half of this year, they had already been to the court once accompanied by a lawyer.
Ms. Liang told the Jimu News reporter that the appendicitis operation brought such serious consequences to Liang Haoran, in addition to the due financial compensation, they will continue to pursue the legal responsibility of the hospital and doctors in the future.
