On the evening of May 15, NIO's second brand Ledao Automobile was officially released, and the first new car Ledao L60 was unveiled, with a pre-sale price of 219,900 yuan, which will be launched and delivered in September this year.

Similar to other pure electric SUV models in the same price range, the Ledao L60 is another model that benchmarks Tesla's Model Y. Unfortunately, one new car after another claimed to kill the Model Y, but none of them stopped the Model Y from leading the way in sales.

What did Ledao L60 do to kill Tesla?

Let's take a look at NIO's script for the L60, designed by former Bentley designer Raul Pires, with the design concept of a coupe SUV. In terms of appearance, it is similar to the style of Tesla Model Y, and the shape of the large slip-back is for a lower drag coefficient to obtain better battery life.

The length, width and height of the L60 are 4848*1930*1616mm, and the wheelbase is 2950mm, positioning it as a mid-size SUV. Officially, the interior space is better than that of the Model Y. Judging from the known data, the Ledao L60 adopts a design without a "front trunk", giving more space to the passenger compartment.

In terms of intelligent driving, which is the key marketing of new energy vehicles, Ledao L60 is equipped with a visual intelligent driving solution, and the whole system is equipped with 30 high-performance perception hardware as standard, including 1 4D imaging millimeter-wave radar, 7 8 million pixel high-definition cameras, and 4 starlight 360-degree cameras. Like the Model Y, the L60 also adopts a purely visual solution. However, the new models of Model Y have been upgraded to HW4.0, and the computing power is much higher than that of Ledao L60. The Model Y also has a killer feature, that is, Tesla's FSD, which will be possible to enter China.

Ledao L60 is built based on a 900V high-voltage architecture, using a fully self-developed 900V silicon carbide main electric drive system, with energy consumption as low as 12.1kWh per 100 kilometers, and the lowest power consumption in the world for medium-sized SUVs. Those who are familiar with Tesla know that the three-electric system has always been its strong point. According to the official data, the Ledao L60 has also successfully surpassed the Model Y in power consumption of 100 kilometers.

In terms of energy replenishment, the Ledao L60 has the advantage of providing three different endurance versions of 555 km, 730 km and 1000 km, and supports more than 1,000 battery swap stations of NIO, which can be completed in three minutes.

In other respects, the Ledao L60 does not necessarily have an advantage over other "Tesla Model Y killers". However, the lower power consumption and the unique skill of "battery replacement" gave Ledao L60 the confidence to want to be a Model Y killer.

"Benchmarking" is difficult to complete "surpassing"

But is there really a car that can kill the Model Y?

In the Chinese market, the sales of Model Y not only surpassed those of the "Model Y killers", but even surpassed most of the gasoline models. There are many new cars that are looking forward to killing Tesla Model Y, from the former Jihu to Xpeng P7, Weilai ET5 to the current Xpeng G6, Weilai ET5T, EC6, Zeekrypton 001, Ideal L7, Zhiji LS6, Wenjie M5/M7 to Xiaomi SU7, Zeekrypton 007, Ideal L6, Haobo HT to the just Weilai sub-brand Ledao L60, almost all of them aim at the Model Y.

Xpeng G6, Zhiji LS6, and Haobo HT are directly benchmarked against Model Y in terms of performance and parameters. These models are basically positioned in the price range of 20-300,000 yuan, medium and large pure electric SUVs, and even have some fastback shapes.

Let's take a look at the sales performance of Model Y, Tesla's Model Y global sales in 2023 will exceed 1.2 million units, and the sales volume in the Chinese market will reach 456,000 units, and in the first four months of this year, Tesla's Model Y sales in the Chinese market have reached 127,600 units.

"What doesn't kill you will only make you stronger" sounds like chicken soup, but for those "killers", this is not "chicken soup" but "wine". In April, Zhiji LS6 sold 1,456 units, Xpeng G6 sold 2,132 units, and Haobo HT sold 430 units; Tesla's Model Y sales were 26,356 units. What's even more difficult is that the sales of the "killers" are still completed under the condition of continuous price reduction.

Why is the Model Y so hard to "kill"?

First of all, Tesla, as one of the leaders of new energy vehicles, will be the primary brand for many people who are not familiar with new energy vehicles but want to buy a mid-to-high-end new energy model.

Importantly, the Model Y is very well-balanced in terms of product strength. Although the Model Y has been released for many years, the Model Y has a very balanced performance in multiple dimensions such as the three-electric system, the maturity of the intelligent cabin software, the intelligent driving experience, the driving quality, the energy replenishment system, and the space utilization rate.

At the same time, after the start of production at Tesla's factory in China, the production cost of the Model Y has been continuously reduced, and the sales price has also been continuously adjusted. In the Chinese market, which likes SUV models, it is not surprising that the Model Y is very popular.

Mr. Yin from Changsha bought a Tesla Model Y in November 2023, and as for the reason for choosing among the many models, Mr. Yin said, "Tesla is still much more well-known, and it is easy to drive and operate. Usually running at high speeds, the Model Y is also convenient for driving assistance."

In fact, there are many similar ideas with Mr. Yin, and the answers given by several Model Y owners are that in fact, after looking at several new energy models at that time, they still chose Model Y after comprehensive consideration, well-known is an important reason, and equilibrium is an indicator without data.

How long can Tesla Model Y sales last? Even industry veterans have not given a standard answer. However, it is not difficult to answer that it is difficult to surpass the competition in a short period of time by comparing the product differentiation of the Model Y.
