In 1933, the Japanese army, which had consolidated the three eastern provinces, began to frequently cause trouble along the Great Wall, and on February 9, the commander of the Japanese Kwantung Army, Muto Nobuyoshi, issued a military order to invade Rehe. On March 6, the 109th Brigade of the 29th Army of the Northwest Army was ordered to garrison the front line of Xifengkou to resist the Japanese invasion.

At that time, the 29th Army was one of the few units in the national army that only managed food and did not pay salaries, and the more than 20,000 people in the army only had more than 10 field artillery and mountain artillery, and the total number of heavy machine guns did not exceed 100, and the rifles used by the soldiers were all native guns, and there were very few bullets! is so poor that even Feng Yuxiang, the boss of the Northwest Army, can't stand it, so he allocated a little money and equipped each of the 29th Army with a big iron knife!

Zhao Dengyu immediately issued an order to recapture the high ground, the officers and men of the 109 Brigade braved the dense guns and artillery to successfully break into the high ground, brandishing a broadsword and hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese army, the Japanese army had never seen such a formation, panicked for a while, counted after recapturing the high ground, annihilated more than 500 enemies, the 109 Brigade suffered more than 300 casualties, and 5 company and platoon commanders sacrificed their lives.
From March 9th to 11th, the main force of the Japanese army arrived, and the 109th Brigade started a tug-of-war with it at Xifengkou, and the battle was stalemate for a while.
On March 11, Zhao Dengyu made a plan to personally lead 500 warriors to make a detour to attack the Japanese army.
The Japanese army had military rules: no one was allowed to strip off his clothes when camping on the battlefield. However, after the 918 Incident, the Japanese army never encountered real resistance from the Nationalist army, let alone a sneak attack, so only a few sentries were sent to guard at night, and the rest of the personnel slept with their heads covered in the occupied houses!
In the early morning of the 12th, Zhao Dengyu's 500 broadsword team descended from the sky like a divine soldier, caught the Japanese army by surprise, and could not effectively organize resistance at all. Unfortunately, the broadsword team encountered intensive fire from the Japanese army during the retreat, and most of the casualties were lost! The soldiers who retreated to camp found that the broadsword they used to slash their enemies had been curled! It can be seen how fierce the battle is.
Later information showed: "In this battle, many enemies were killed, and one enemy commander was killed. Our army also suffered heavy casualties, the commander of the dead counted Hu Chonglu, the deputy of the regiment, the battalion commander Su Dongyuan, and the company commander; The wounded were one regimental lieutenant, two battalion commanders, and seven company commanders. ”
This is the famous "Xifengkou Victory". Later, composer Mai Xin composed "March of the Great Knife" based on this.
On March 16, the Japanese army abandoned Xifengkou and attacked Luojiayu instead. The "broadsword team" of the 29th Army is even more famous all over the world.

On July 28, 1937, Zhao Dengyu, a fierce general who won a great victory at Xifengkou, died in the Beiping Anti-Japanese War at the age of 39!

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Zhao Dengyu was posthumously recognized as an anti-Japanese martyr, and Chairman Mao personally signed Zhao Dengyu's martyr certificate.
