According to statistics, PS5 shipments in the first quarter of 2024 are 5 times larger than Xbox Series X/S

In the first quarter of 2024, Sony's PS5 console shipped almost five times more than Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S console. This is based on estimates by sales tracking firm Niko Partners, which Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights, shared on X.

Sony reported today that it shipped 4.5 million PS5 units in the three months to March, bringing its total shipments to 59.3 million units. While Microsoft didn't release sales figures for the Xbox Series X/S console, it confirmed a significant drop in hardware revenue in its Q1 earnings report this year. Activision Blizzard's software sales actually helped drive Microsoft's gaming division's record quarterly results, but Xbox hardware revenue fell 31% year-over-year.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were launched in November 2020, and by the end of last year, their sales had surpassed Xbox Series X/S by about twice as much, according to data shared by Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two in February. In 2023 alone, PS5 sales will surpass Xbox Series X/S by almost 3 to 1, according to estimates from research firm Ampere Analysis.

Last year, Microsoft publicly admitted to "losing the console wars" and has been in third place in sales since the launch of the original Xbox in 2001, behind PlayStation and Nintendo.

Through years of acquiring multi-platform titles such as Minecraft and Call of Duty, Xbox has become a major publisher for PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.

In February, Microsoft released an Xbox business update, confirming plans to bring more first-party games to rival platforms, starting with Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded.
