SEMI: The global semiconductor manufacturing industry improved in Q1, and China's production capacity growth rate was the highest

On May 14, the latest report compiled by SEMI (International Semiconductor Industry Association) in cooperation with research agency TechInsights showed that with the rise in sales in the electronics sector, the stabilization of inventories and the increase in wafer factory capacity, the global semiconductor manufacturing industry showed signs of improvement in the first quarter of 2024, and industry growth is expected to be stronger in the second half of the year.

IC sales grew strongly by 22% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2024 and are expected to surge by 21% in the second quarter of 2024 as shipments of high-performance computing (HPC) chips increase and memory pricing continues to improve, the report said. IC inventory levels stabilized in the first quarter of 2024 and are expected to improve in the current quarter. In addition, fab capacity continues to increase, with an estimated 40 million wafers per quarter (in 300mm wafer equivalent) increments, with capacity growth of 1.2% in the first quarter of this year and 1.4% in the second quarter, with China still having the highest capacity growth rate among all regions.

Clark Tseng, principal analyst at SEMI, said: "Demand is recovering in some semiconductor segments, but at an uneven pace. AI chips and high-bandwidth memory are currently the most in-demand devices, leading to investment and capacity expansion in these areas. However, as AI chips rely on a few key vendors, their impact on IC shipment growth remains limited. ”

Boris Metodiev, director of market analysis at TechInsights, said: "Semiconductor demand in the first half of 2024 was mixed, with memory and logic rebounding due to a surge in demand for generative AI. However, due to the slow recovery of the consumer market, coupled with the pullback in demand in the automotive and industrial markets, there was a slight correction in analog, discrete, and optoelectronic products. "Consumer demand is expected to be boosted as AI expands to the edge, with a full recovery likely in the second half of the year. In addition, the automotive and industrial markets are expected to return to growth in the second half of the year as interest rates fall and inventories fall.
