But now, the 2024 Annual Public Science Day is really coming again!

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Public Science Day, so a huge "20" on the official poster is very eye-catching.

The Institute of Geology and Earth of the Chinese Academy of Sciences will meet you on the 2024 Public Science Day

The Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Geology and Geophysics) will once again open its arms to welcome everyone to visit the 2024 Public Science Day with the theme of "Talking about the World and Pursuing the Mysteries".

In order to let all the adults and children have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the geology and earth, the organizers of the event have started planning early. Below, we will briefly introduce the activities of the Public Science Day.

1. Popular science report

The theme of the 2024 Public Science Day at the Institute of Geology and Earth is "Talking about the World, Pursuing Mysteries". We specially invited two outstanding young scientists from the institute to give a popular science report.

From 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the young space physicist researcher Ge Yasong gave a report entitled "The Mystery of the Aurora - Why Can You See the Aurora in Beijing?" (Do you still remember the gorgeous aurora that appeared in Mohe in the winter of 2023?) Even in Beijing, there are people who have observed the aurora! And another larger-scale aurora show that will start on the evening of May 10, 2024 has swept up the circle of friends! )

From 14:00 to 15:00 in the afternoon, associate researcher Tang Zihua, a scholar of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment, will bring you an interesting report: Give me a tooth and find your home.

2. Visit the park

The institute campus is quiet and tidy, and researchers and graduate students usually work and rest from the 1st to 8th floors of the ground. The park visit is divided into morning session (8:30-11:30) and afternoon session (13:30-16:30).

The venues open for this public science day include: key laboratories, museums, history museums, popular science seismograph booths, and academician Liu Dongsheng memorial exhibition room. The specific content and location are as follows:

(1) Visits to key laboratories

1. Intelligent Pilot Drilling Integrated Testing Laboratory (101, 2nd Floor): The Chinese Academy of Sciences' Class A Strategic Pilot Science and Technology Special Project "Intelligent Guided Drilling Technology and Equipment System and Related Theoretical Research" (hereinafter referred to as the "Intelligent Guided Drilling Project") aims at the major strategic needs of oil and gas resources in the mainland, starting from the theory of deep petroleum geology, overcoming intelligent pilot drilling technology, realizing "accurate circle", "accurate setting" and "accurate hitting", and forming an overall technical solution for the development of deep (6000 meters) oil and gas resources. Break through the major theoretical and technical bottlenecks faced by deep-ultra-deep oil and gas exploration and development, support the exploration and development of deep oil and gas and geothermal energy in the mainland in the next 20 years, and provide core technologies for future exploration and development of unconventional oil and gas.

2. Space Environment Exploration Laboratory (501, 2nd Floor): It is composed of a space environment observation station chain, a station chain monitoring and a data center. The observatory chain is arranged along the meridian from the northernmost to the southernmost part of the mainland continent, including seven comprehensive space environment observation stations in Mohe in Heilongjiang, Beijing, Wuhan in Hubei, Guilin in Guangxi, Dongfang in Hainan, Ledong and Sanya, and relevant observations are carried out at Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and Yellow River Station in the Arctic. The laboratory has a variety of comprehensive detection methods to carry out long-term positioning scientific observations in the three fields of ionosphere, geomagnetism and middle and upper atmosphere.

3. Biogeomagnetism and Biomineralization Laboratory (6th Floor, 2nd Floor): Through the substantial cross-integration of the three first-level disciplines of earth science, life science and materials science, the laboratory uses advanced analytical technologies and methods such as rock magnetism and nanomagnetism, microbiology, molecular biology, condensed matter physics and nanomedicine, focusing on (1) the impact of geomagnetic field on life and the mechanism of biological response to geomagnetic field; (2) microbial mineralization processes and molecular mechanisms of iron-bearing minerals; (3) Fossil magnetosome identification and application; (4) Research work in four fields: biomimetic synthesis and application of nanomagnetic materials. The "Biological Effect Research Collective of Geomagnetic Field Changes" won the 2022 Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

4. Ion Probe Laboratory (148, 3rd Floor): Founded in 2007, the laboratory has successively introduced CAMECA IMS-1280 and CAMECA IMS-1280HR ion probe devices, and is committed to providing a high-level analysis and research platform for geoscientists at home and abroad, and playing an important role in the research of geochronology, deep earth dynamics, earth evolution, astrochemistry and comparative planetology, mineral resources and global change. The Chang'e-5 lunar soil sample, published in the internationally renowned journal Nature in 2021, is 2.03 billion years old and came from the laboratory.

5. Rare Gas Laboratory (149, 3rd Floor): The laboratory has 4 sets of self-developed gas extraction and purification systems, 3 sets of rare gas mass spectrometers (Noblesse, Helix SFT and Helix MC Plus), 1 CO2 laser and 1 excimer laser, which can accurately analyze the rare gas isotopes of mantle and ore deposit samples, and effectively distinguish the sources of recirculating crustal, lithospheric mantle and deep mantle materials. Isotope analysis of rare gases and cosmic exposure age testing of trace extraterrestrial samples can also be performed.

7. Paleomagnetism and Chronology Laboratory (east side of the first floor of the 6th floor): Paleomagnetism is a sub-discipline of geophysics, which studies the characteristics of the geomagnetic field that causes them to magnetize by measuring the natural residual magnetism of rocks and certain antiquities, analyzing their magnetization history. The laboratory is a modern open laboratory with international level, with international advanced hardware equipment and complete testing methods, and is a world-renowned research center for rock magnetism and paleomagnetism. His research interests include the internal dynamics of the earth, the age of magnetic strata, the evolution of tectonic movements, and archaeological magnetism.
