Obedience training is a subject that every police dog must practice every day, and puppies generally begin to participate in obedience training at the age of three or four months, such as explosive search and physical evidence search for more professional subjects. An adult dog needs to be trained for three to four months to initially complete the training, and the intensive training is still necessary in the later stage. When not on duty, the police dog has to carry out four intensive training sessions a day, each training time is no more than 15 minutes, and the training time is about 6 hours a day.
The police dog base of the Tashai Reclamation District Public Security Bureau was established in December 2023, covering an area of 20,665 square meters, with German Shepherds, Springer, horse dogs and other dog breeds.
"Every police dog has a file. In order for puppies to grow into qualified police dogs, they need to go through multiple stages such as strict screening, young training, affinity training, physical training, basic subject training, environmental adaptation training, and professional subject training......" said Wang Peilong, the police officer in charge of the police dog base.
How to train a police dog? "If you want to teach it to complete some instructions, you can guide it to complete them after giving them, and then give them a reward, and the cycle will continue until the dog develops a habit." The handler says that if the dog makes a mistake, when it does it again, give instructions to stop it and reward it when it does it right.
At 8:30 a.m. every day, the base trainers start to work, morning training, and cleaning the kennels...... During the day, it is mainly focused on training, and at night, it is guarded without leaving people. In their spare time, the trainers will take their dogs to play in the training ground, and the police dogs will also fall to the ground, begging for comfort or standing upright for a hug. The base is secluded and the training is boring, but these are not enough to counteract the dependence on the police dog day and night.
Handlers have the enviable privilege of naming the dogs they train. "Sky Fire", "Twinkle", "Chasing the Wind", "Little Tiger", ...... Behind each name is the handler's expectation of the police dog.
The level of police dog technology is related to the role of police dogs. Since the police dog base was put into use, the police dog base of the Public Security Bureau of Tashai Reclamation District has focused on the three elements of people, dogs and technology, focusing on building a technical talent pool and a police dog equipment library, giving full play to the role of the police dog base as a 'whetstone', exploring and strengthening the police dog brand, so that police dogs can play a more important role in fighting crime and maintaining stability.
