Porsche announced today that it will unveil its first hybrid Porsche 911 on May 28. The new car completed one lap at the Nürburgring with a time of 7:16.934, 8.7 seconds faster than its pre-facelift counterpart. And, the 911 hybrid is officially faster than the 641-horsepower 992.1 Turbo S, which has a lap time of 7:17.3.
Driving the hybrid 911 this time was Porsche brand ambassador Jorg Bergmeister, and the prototype was fitted with standard road tyres and a fixed-wing aerodynamic package.
More than 4.98 million kilometers of development tests have been completed for the new Porsche 911 Hybrid, with numerous tests on the track, on country roads and in urban traffic, proving that the high-performance hybrid system is ready for series production.
Speaking about the arduous development process, the vice president of the Porsche 718 and 911 models said that Porsche "left no chances in the development process, and the new 911 was tested in a variety of conditions around the world, from bitter cold to extreme heat, just like the final stage of testing in Dubai." ”
Porsche hasn't revealed too many details about the hybrid 911, but judging by previous news, it won't be a plug-in hybrid, relying on a smaller battery for torque replenishment and faster turbocharger start-up to reduce latency. According to Porsche, the new model is 8.7 seconds faster than before the facelift, and the hybrid 911 should be a facelift of the 572-horsepower 911 Turbo.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume had previously described the model as "a racing-grade supersport hybrid in a select spin-off of the 911 model family".
Other Porsche models will also be updated, with the Carrera likely to revert to a naturally aspirated engine again, and the hybrid model will only be available in an AWD version.
Externally, all Porsche 911 models will be updated with a new front design and a new vertical radiator. When the facelift of the 992.2 is unveiled on May 28, the new hybrid model may be unveiled alongside the base Carrera model. The GTS and GT3 models will be unveiled at a separate launch event.
