Improve scientific literacy and feel the beauty of nature | People's Daily

At the beginning of 2024, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly issued a notice to announce the list of national natural resources science popularization bases in 2023, and 50 science popularization bases were named as national natural resources science popularization bases.

In recent years, various science popularization bases have continuously improved their science popularization service capabilities, carried out diversified science popularization activities, highlighted public welfare, openness and demonstration, promoted the popularization of natural resource science knowledge, and improved citizens' natural resource science literacy. Innovative Carriers Utilizing Resources "Is it really possible to drive a drilling rig in a building?" "How deep did you dig this hole and what did you dig up?" In the drilling laboratory of the Earth Science Building of Central South University, a group of middle school students surrounded the experimenter Kuang Lixin and asked questions, and their curious eyes focused on the four-story drilling rig in the laboratory. This is the National Natural Resources Science Popularization Base of Central South University, where students can not only visit, but also experience all kinds of experimental equipment in the front line of teaching and scientific research. Wang Lichang, the person in charge of the base, said that the entire building is a science popularization base, and each laboratory is rich in science popularization resources. How did a university laboratory become a popular science resort? Wang Lichang introduced that after completing the teaching and scientific research tasks, the university laboratory still has some free time. At the same time, the process models, achievement products and device prototypes formed after the completion of many major scientific research projects are not fully utilized and lack exhibition opportunities. "The popular science base gives full play to the advantages of rich scientific and educational resources in colleges and universities, innovates carriers, makes full use of resources, and makes use of the venues, equipment, facilities and models used for teaching and scientific research, which can not only reduce the idleness of scientific and educational resources, but also ensure the scientificity and rigor of science popularization." Wang Lichang said. Walking into the Mineralogy Laboratory and Petrology Laboratory, you can visually display the microscopic world of the earth with pieces of mineral samples and boxes of rock flake specimens. According to experimenter Shen Can, relying on the equipment and specimen system of the Earth Science Experimental Center of Central South University, children can observe rock thin slice specimens through a microscope. "For the first time, many children see that the rock is translucent after being sliced and polished, and the structure and texture of the rock can be clearly observed through a microscope, which is an experience that cannot be obtained through animation, brochures and text." Shen Can said. "In addition to the laboratory, the popular science base also has a deep drilling platform, a geological hazard simulation demonstration room, etc., which can allow children to get in touch with the complete earth science system." Mao Anqi, an experimenter, said that it is now a popular check-in place for primary and secondary school students. Not only please come in, but also go out. The popular science base continues to expand movable popular science resources by holding popular science lectures and moving lightweight exhibits into the campus: entering the primary school campus to hold paleontological popular science activities, carrying out popular science lectures, fossil exhibitions, group exploration, etc.; Organize various forms of "fossil garden parties" to lead young people to experience fossil excavation and other activities to stimulate their interest in learning paleontological knowledge...... The in-depth popularization of science has imperceptibly affected children's life interests and career choices. "In the past, when it came to geology, many children could only think of prospecting and exploration." Kuang Lixin said that now, more and more children have learned about the richer connotation of earth science and have integrated their personal ideals into the cause of earth science on the mainland. Three-dimensional demonstration and interactive experience Located in Haidian District, Beijing, the China Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology Museum is the first national specialized exhibition hall in mainland China with the theme of surveying, mapping and geographic information. "It is the goal that we have been striving to pursue to let more people understand surveying and mapping, approach surveying and mapping, and apply surveying and mapping." Xu Yao, the docent of the China Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology Museum, introduced that the China Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology Museum systematically displays the history of China's surveying and mapping, the progress of surveying and mapping technology, the wide application of surveying and mapping achievements and the development of the geographic information industry to the public through sound, light, electricity, three-dimensional demonstration, interactive experience and other means. Walking in the museum, a wonderful scientific and technological experience shows the magical charm of modern surveying and mapping. In the aerial photography exhibition area, through the simulation display, you can learn about drone aerial photography: as the unmanned small aircraft crosses overhead, the miniature landscape where the small aircraft goes is immediately presented on the big screen in front of you, and the beautiful scenery of mountains and rivers, cities and villages converge into a clear, vivid and three-dimensional aerial image. In the geographical national conditions monitoring exhibition area, by clicking on the images and maps of different periods, the stark contrast is presented in front of you: the vegetation coverage rate in northern Shaanxi is constantly improving; A city has changed dramatically from breaking ground to building tall buildings...... In the urban smart pipe network experience area, through the transparent glass on the ground, you can clearly see the criss-crossing of underground electricity, water, gas and other pipelines. A visitor holds a sensor device to detect on the ground, and at the same time, a large screen on the side shows the thickness and length of these pipelines. Suddenly, the alarm sounded, and I saw a leak in a pipe under the glass that the sensor had touched, and gas was spewing up from the pipe. At this time, the large screen shows that the phone of the virtual emergency rescue department has been connected, and the emergency rescue vehicle will set off immediately. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, revolutionary changes have taken place in the technology and equipment of mainland surveying and mapping. The satellite positioning system has realized the ideal of the ancients of "the status of connecting the sky and the stars", and the aerospace remote sensing has constituted a "heaven and earth network" for earth observation, and the surveying and mapping work is moving towards automation, digitization and intelligence. The China Science and Technology Museum of Surveying and Mapping has created a large number of distinctive science popularization activities, promoted the development of science popularization and publicity and education in an orderly manner, and publicized and displayed the new achievements and progress in the development of surveying, mapping geographic information and natural resources to the whole society. Expert-led demonstration drive In the Datong soil forest in the north of Duzhuang Village, Yunzhou District, Datong City, Shanxi Province, there are earth pillars and stone walls of different shapes, or like a castle hanging alone, or like a strange peak alone, or like a tiger lying on the post, the traces of flowing water are engraved on the rock wall, leaving the folds after years of polishing. "Tens of thousands of years ago, the tectonic movement in this area was active, and in the cycle of surface water erosion, soil weathering, and saline-alkali precipitation, the thin soil ditches gradually widened, and the widened soil ditches collapsed and separated in the erosion, and slowly evolved into soil walls or soil pillars, forming the Datong soil forest." Fu Binghua, the docent of Datong Tulin Scenic Area, introduced the origin of Tulin, "There is actually a lot of knowledge in these 'soil lumps'. Through the explanation, more people will be interested in earth science and feel the beauty of nature. "To promote the popularization of science in scenic spots to professionalization, it must be led by experts and driven by demonstration, and constantly expand the team of science popularization talents." Tian Lianjie, general manager of Yunzhou Tulin Ecotourism Development Co., Ltd., introduced that the scenic spot invited experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and other relevant fields to join the volunteer work of science popularization and carry out explanation and training for science popularization personnel and volunteers. In the expert studio in the scenic area, the reporter met Su Dechen, a researcher at the Institute of Geology of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. After becoming a special expert in Datong Tulin Scenic Area, Su Dechen gave popular science lectures online and offline: carried out soil and forest geology research activities twice a week, attracting more than 30,000 primary and secondary school students from inside and outside the province each time; held more than 160 lectures on popular science research and education; 13 short videos were produced and published on the Internet, explaining the geology and landform of the soil forest, and received good social repercussions. "To do a good job in science popularization, it is not only necessary to be professional, but also interesting." Su Dechen said that they plan to publish hand-drawn popular science books to present geological knowledge in a more interesting way. In recent years, Datong Tulin Scenic Area has invested more than 970 yuan for the protection and construction of popular science bases, the creation of popular science materials, etc., and the construction of 870 square meters of popular science venues.
