The resolution, co-sponsored by Arab countries and others, suggested that the Security Council reconsider Palestine's candidacy for membership in the United Nations. The resolution also calls for greater Palestinian participation in international affairs, such as the ability to take alphabetical seats in the General Assembly, the ability to make statements, make proposals, be elected to positions in the General Assembly and other committees, and participate fully and effectively in major international meetings under the auspices of the General Assembly and other bodies.
However, the resolution also stresses that Palestine still does not have the right to vote in the General Assembly.

Wood, deputy permanent representative of the United States to the United Nations, said that the United States believes that the establishment of a Palestinian state can only be achieved through direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, and the United States does not support the United Nations in advancing this goal through unilateral measures.

There was also a dramatic scene at the UN General Assembly, when Israel's permanent representative to the United Nations, Erdan, brought an electric shredder to the podium and shattered the UN Charter, criticizing all the countries that voted in favor of the resolution as "shameless".
