According to foreign reports, Tesla launched a new variant of Model Y - a long-range rear-wheel drive model, and cut the previous RWD model, which was previously the cheapest Model Y ever built in the United States.

Tesla's prices have been fluctuating as usual lately, and just two weeks ago, the Model Y also received a $2000 discount. This discount makes it equivalent to the lowest price ever, at least when tax credits are taken into account.

But now Tesla has axed the model, the RWD Model Y, which has a standard range, and replaced it with a longer range model that costs $2,000 or more.

Tesla has updated its website with the addition of a new long-range RWD Model Y, starting at $44,990. However, like the previous model, it also qualifies for the U.S. EV Tax Credit, so if you qualify, you can buy it for $37,500.

The LR RWD model began shipping in Europe early last month, so it's no surprise to see it coming to the U.S. now.

The new model is about the same as the old one, but the battery is larger. The LR RWD has a range of 320 miles instead of the SR RWD's 260-mile range. For just $2,000 more, that's already quite a leap forward, though the lower base price might be better retained for those who don't need the series.

That is, until April 19, the Model Y SR RWD will be sold for the same price as the LR RWD today. In the first quarter of this year, Tesla did run some temporary discounts, but basically, amid price fluctuations, you're now just buying a car with a longer range at roughly the same price that you paid for some part of the past few years. months. Not too shabby.

In addition to these changes, Tesla has added a new Quicksilver paint option for $2,000, but it's only available for long-range AWD and high-performance models.

This color is light gray/silver but has a lot of depth. It's been available in Europe since 2022, and it's a really good-looking color by all means (if you like it). It's the first time it's coming to the U.S. — although some stock cars already have that color in the last week or so.

Tesla also said that owners who bought a 260-mile battery actually got a car with additional hidden battery capacity. Tesla has done this before in the name of manufacturing simplicity – producing individual battery packs, but locking some of them into the lower range through software.

Tesla plans to offer a software unlock service that allows owners who purchase a 260-mile SR RWD to add an additional 40-60 miles of range, depending on the battery cells they have, for an additional $1,500-2,000. But the plan is awaiting regulatory approval, so stay tuned for when that happens.
