In addition to denoting an action or state of being that took place at a certain time in the past, the simple past tense also denotes an action that occurred frequently or repeatedly in the past, and adverbs such as often and always are used together. As:
Sam always went to work by bus last month. 上个月山姆总是坐公交车上班。
(1) Structure in simple past tense.
(1) Affirmative sentence: subject + past tense of predicate verb + other. The predicate verb does not change with the change of the subject person. As:
I/Ann saw a film last week.上周我/安看了一部电影。
(2) Negative sentence: subject + didn't + verb form + other. As:
Carrie didn't have breakfast this morning. 卡莉今天早上没吃饭。
(3) The structure of the general interrogative sentence in the general past tense of the verb containing the real meaning should be borrowed from the auxiliary verb did, the did should be placed before the subject, the predicate verb should be in the original form, and the question mark should be added at the end of the sentence. The auxiliary verb did is also used in the abbreviated answer. As:
—Did you go to the zoo last Sunday? 你上周日去动物园了吗?
—Yes, I did./ No, I didn't. 是的, 我去了。 /不, 我没去。
Note: The auxiliary verb did, didn't has no conjugation of the pronoun and number, that is, the auxiliary verb did, didn't is used regardless of the person of the subject, whether it is singular or plural.
(2) Specific usage.
(1) Indicates an action or state of existence that occurred in the past. As:
Kangkang had a birthday party last Wednesday. 康康上周三办了一个生日聚会。
(2) Indicates a series of actions that occurred in succession in the past. As:
Jack went to a bookshop and bought a storybook last Wednesday. 上周三杰克去了书店, 并买了一本故事书。
(3) Indicates a frequent and repeated action in a certain period of time in the past. As:
When Tom was young, he always asked many strange questions. 当汤姆小的时候, 他总是问许多奇怪的问题。
