Since the reform and opening up, the Third Plenary Session of the CPC Central Committee has usually taken reform as the main line and put forward important directions for economic and social development and economic system reform. This article reviews the conference themes and important documents of the Third Plenary Session of the Central Committee from 1978 to 2018.

Judging from the previous sessions, the "Third Plenary Session" usually takes "economy and reform" as the theme. Since 1978, the Third Plenary Session of the CPC Central Committee has been convened nine times, focusing on economic reform (4 times), price reform (1 time), rural reform (2 times), comprehensively deepening reform (1 time), and reform of party and state institutions (1 time). Among them, the Third Plenary Session of the 11 th CPC Central Committee, as an important historical turning point, marked the beginning of reform and opening up, and the Third Plenary Session of the 18 th CPC Central Committee, with comprehensively deepening reform as the main line, is systematic and comprehensive, and is of great significance in the reform process. The Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee proposed to deepen the reform in six major areas: deepening the reform of the economic system, deepening the reform of the political system, deepening the reform of the cultural system, deepening the reform of the social system, deepening the reform of the ecological civilization system, and deepening the reform of the party building system.

Historically, the Third Plenum of the CPC Central Committee was usually held in October and November of the second year after the First Plenum of the CPC Central Committee, and in special circumstances, it would be held around the time of the two sessions in the following year. Looking forward to the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, it may focus on key words such as new quality productivity, adhering to and improving the basic economic system, market-oriented reform of land elements, and high-level institutional opening-up.
