I want to ask after becoming a mother

What's the sound you're most afraid of hearing?

That must be a cough!

13 deaths in 2 months! Highly infectious! Beware, this disease is easily misdiagnosed as a cold

As soon as I hear someone coughing

The old mother automatically sounded the alarm

Quickly pull the baby away from the scene

If you hear your baby coughing

That's like a great enemy

Feel your head and look at your throat

I'm afraid that the baby will be recruited

01

Whooping cough, will it cough for 100 days?

Yes, really.

Pertussis is an acute respiratory illness caused by the bacillus pertussis.

It is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets, but it can also be transmitted through close contact, and it is highly contagious. A cough, sneeze, or stay in the same room with you for a long time can be "transmitted" to you.

Men and women, young and old, are all susceptible to whooping cough.

Children under the age of 6 have weak resistance and are the most likely to be hit. In particular, the incidence is higher in infants under 3 months of age who have weak immunity and have not reached the age of vaccination.

"provoked" whooping cough, and there are two main manifestations -

  • Paroxysmal, crampy cough
  • Inhalation sound like a rooster crow

The child will cough for a while, and the cough will not stop. Due to the severe coughing, the child will vomit, lack of oxygen, and in severe cases, even have bloodshot eyes and difficulty breathing.

What's more troublesome is that it is not only a bad cough, but also a long cough.

In untreated children with whooping cough, the cough may last for 2~3 months, and in small infants it may be 3~4 months.

So, if the child has whooping cough, the mother will be very anxious.

At first, it resembles a cold and is easily misdiagnosed

Typical pertussis usually has three stages:

(1) Catarrhal phase (about 1~2 weeks)

In the beginning, the symptoms of whooping cough are similar to those of the common cold, but there are also symptoms of cough, runny nose, sneezing, and sometimes a low-grade fever, which is often overlooked or misdiagnosed.

In fact, there is a difference between whooping cough and the common cold:

Infected with whooping cough, the first 1~3 weeks, especially the first week, is the most contagious. (Whooping cough is a Class B infectious disease, so you should isolate it)

After 3~4 days, the symptoms of sneezing and runny nose (a few have low-grade fever) disappeared, but the cough gradually worsened.

(2) Cough cramp period (about 2~8 weeks)

The condition entered a peak, the cough was short and continuous, the face was red, and the snot and tears flowed out.

At the end of the cough, there is often an echo like a rooster crow, and vomiting may occur after coughing, and the attack will be more pronounced at night.

(3) Recovery period (about 2~3 weeks or longer)

During this period, paroxysmal cough decreases or even disappears, and vomiting gradually subsides after coughing. But if you cry, smell smoke, be irritated by cold air, etc., you will cough again.

In some children, relapse may occur after remission.

If pertussis is suspected, what tests should be done?

If your child has these 4 symptoms, it may be whooping cough:

✔ The cold symptoms gradually improved, but the cough did not go away for a long time, and "the more it was treated, the worse it became"

✔ Strange cough (echo like a rooster crow)

✔ The cough is mainly nocturnal and has a long duration and severity

✔ Cough with red face and red ears, often accompanied by vomiting

If the typical manifestations described above have been present, especially if there is a clear history of exposure, the diagnosis is suspected.

If a complete blood count shows that white blood cells and lymphocytes are markedly elevated, the diagnosis can be made clinically.

At present, the main nucleic acid test for nasopharyngeal swab pertussis is used for diagnosis.

Does it matter if you have whooping cough?

It depends.

(1) Older children or adults

Older children, who are generally well, or adults who have whooping cough, may have cough as the main symptom. After standardized treatment, in general, there will not be much of a problem.

Of course, the elderly or adults with weakened immunity who have whooping cough may also have severe symptoms.

(2) Small infants/children with underlying medical conditions

Such children are more likely to have severe disease. Moreover, the younger the age, the more serious the disease.

Novices should pay special attention to:

Babies under 6 months of age may not have a typical cough, and some may not even have a cough. Instead, there are paroxysmal flushing or bluishing of the complexion and apnea.

How to prevent pertussis during the epidemic period?

(1) Get vaccinated

This is the most important measure to prevent whooping cough.

For diphtheria, pertussis (pertussis + diphtheria + tetanus) vaccine, the initial vaccination time is March, April, and May after birth.

When the child is 1 and a half years old, he will also receive a booster shot.

Some parents ask:

The baby has been vaccinated against whooping cough, why does she still get whooping cough?

This is because the success rate of each vaccination is not 100%. And each child's immune status is different, and the titer produced after vaccination is different.

Moreover, the pertussis vaccine commonly vaccinated for infants and young children in China is a acellular pertussis vaccine, which usually decreases the level of protective antibodies after 3~5 years of vaccination, and almost disappears after 12 years.

Despite this, the pertussis vaccine still needs to be given.

Even if you get whooping cough after vaccination, your condition will be greatly reduced.

(2) Do a good job of isolation

Data show that 76%~83% of the infectious sources of whooping cough come from family members. Of these, 55% were from parents.

Therefore, if a family member has a cough, it is necessary to check and treat it in time.

(3) Drug prophylaxis

People who are in close contact with patients and are at high risk of developing severe pertussis should take erythromycin and other drugs for 7~10 days for preventive treatment.

If you have a child with whooping cough at home, you should pay attention to 3 points

If your child's cough is not severe and his or her lips are not white or purple when he coughs, he or she is usually not dangerous.

After the appointment, you can observe and recuperate at home. If there is an abnormality, go to the hospital again.

The child is recuperating at home

What can parents do?

(1) Do a good job of isolation

After being diagnosed with whooping cough, it is necessary to isolate as soon as possible, and it is best to let the child live in a separate room at home. Prevent undesirable stimuli such as smoke, odor, exertion and stress.

Pay attention to the ventilation of the windows that are always open, and the clothes are washed and dried frequently. Drink plenty of water.

(2) Timely expectoration

Some children will be suffocated due to coughing and phlegm blockage. When there is a lot of phlegm or phlegm blockage, pay attention to patting the back to help discharge sputum, and if necessary, you need to suction.

If coughing causes vomiting, ask your child to twist his head to the side to prevent vomit from entering the trachea and causing suffocation, and rinse his or her mouth after vomiting.

(3) Eat smaller, more frequent meals

For sick children who have cough and vomiting that affect their eating, the food should be fine, soft and easy to digest, and they should be eaten in small quantities and supplemented at any time.

It is recommended to eat less irritating foods such as raw and cold, spicy, and greasy.
