The situation on the frontal battlefield in Chasov Yar has slowed down, and after the Russian army captured the canal micro-area, it reduced the frequency of bombing of targets in the urban area of Chasov Yar and the positions of the Ukrainian army in the western suburbs. This allowed the Ukrainian defenders to breathe a sigh of relief for a while, and the Ukrainian military also took the opportunity to adjust its deployment and mobilize reinforcements from the periphery to consolidate the defenses of the western and northern flanks of Chasov Yar. In the opinion of the Ukrainian military, in the current situation, the Chasov Yar fortress cannot afford to lose. But the Western media are not optimistic. On April 28, according to the Swiss newspaper Blick, many Ukrainian commanders believe that Ukraine will not win despite its pledge to continue to assist Ukraine.
What's more, Ukrainian frontline commanders are also extremely pessimistic about the prospects for the war. The commander of the Ukrainian army, who was interviewed by Swiss media, said that "despite the promise of $61 billion in military aid from the United States, many commanders in Ukraine no longer believe that Ukraine will win". According to the report, the reasons for this sad situation are the lack of fighters in Ukraine, delays in Western aid, and arbitrary command at the top. The commander said that after Syrsky was appointed commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, some Ukrainian soldiers were still sent to carry out tasks despite insufficient ammunition and manpower.
There were no reinforcements on the Chasov Yar front, a rare phenomenon since the outbreak of the war. Elite units, including the 3rd Assault Brigade (Azov), refused to follow Syrsky's orders to reinforce Chasov Yar. The Ukrainian defenders in the region have lost more than half of their combat brigades, and some even have only a third of their troops left. On the western outskirts of Chasov Yar, in the fields and in the woods, the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers who died were strangled by the bombardment of the Russian army by air-ground fire and drones. In the past, the corpses of these dead Ukrainian soldiers would be marked with the label "Cargo 200" and transported back to the rear, but now there are no Ukrainian troops to clean up the bodies.
As the temperature in eastern Ukraine rises day by day, a large number of "200 cargo" abandoned by Ukraine begins to rot and stink. The Russian army was forced to dispatch anti-chemical troops to carry out battlefield sanitizing operations, and a large number of Ukrainian corpses scattered on the positions were concentrated, sprayed with disinfectant and deodorant and buried to prevent a large-scale outbreak of plague. Subsequently, the Russian army began to control the defensive positions of the Ukrainian army in these "gray areas". And the Ukrainian army is no longer able to launch any counteroffensive against the above-mentioned defensive positions.
The Russian army posted the video of the cleanup of Ukraine's "Cargo No. 200" to social platforms, which had a huge impact on the psychology of living Ukrainian soldiers and further weakened the morale of the Ukrainian army. If they remain on the battlefield, they will eventually be corrupted into mud like these "200 cargo". This was determined by the brutality of the war, and there is no doubt that there will be more sudden routs like the Battle of Avadiivka in the future.
