In fact, since the outbreak of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October last year, there have been students in American universities who support Palestine, and these students have also condemned Israel's crimes in Gaza through rallies and leaflets.
This is because the United States has recently introduced several policies, but before talking about these policies, let's understand the background of these policies.
After the outbreak of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, more and more Americans learned about the tragic situation in Gaza, and American college students with a conscience began to hold rallies on campus to protest in a peaceful way.
There are three main demands for their protests:
1: Oppose what the Israeli army is doing in Gaza and demand an immediate end to the massacre of the people in Gaza.
2: Call on schools to divest from Israel and stop investing in war-related companies. Top schools have foundations, for the purpose of value preservation or appreciation, will invest abroad, the United States and Israel have a relatively good relationship, American universities have also invested in many Israeli companies, and now students are demanding that the school withdraw its investment, otherwise it is aiding and abetting.
3: Support for the establishment of a Palestinian state, and put forward a slogan: from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free. The river is the Jordan River and the sea is the Mediterranean, which means that the American students support the Palestinian reintegration program, including the areas now occupied by Israel.
These demands are actually very reasonable.
It was not radical, nor was it anti-Semitic, because many of the students who participated in the rally were Jewish.
But the United States is saying that they are anti-Semitic. For example, in December last year, the presidents of Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) participated in congressional hearings to accuse them of their "anti-Semitic" stance on campuses, and then these presidents resigned. These are the consequences of disobedience, and that's it, see? Even top universities like Harvard, MIT, and Pennsylvania can't make an exception!
Columbia University was also targeted, and on April 16, the U.S. House of Representatives, by a vote of 377 to 44, ruled that the slogan "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" was "anti-Semitic."
Columbia University President Minush Shafiq, who did not stand with her students, knelt down to testify before the House Education and Workforce Committee on allegations of anti-Semitism in the protests, and also pledged to crack down on unauthorized student protests related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
On April 17, Columbia University administrators, subpoenaed by the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, were tortured in turn, and at this hearing, the president of Columbia University behaved extremely obediently in order to keep his position, saying that he had let more than 15 students attend classes and let five professors leave the classroom. However, her obedience made Columbia students and faculty members very unhappy and became the fuse. On the same day, in solidarity with Palestinian students, the "Gaza Solidarity Camp" was established to oppose the school's business dealings with Israel and condemn the weak posture of the leadership of Columbia University.
In an effort to keep his position, President Shafik allowed New York police to enter the school and forcibly cleared students who protested and refused to leave, and on April 18, police arrested more than 100 students on trespassing.
It is rare for Columbia University to expel students who are peacefully protesting so quickly and aggressively, and it is the first time since the outbreak of the Vietnam War in 1968 that American police have entered a campus to violently suppress students.
This has angered other school students who support Palestine, and it is not just a matter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but also involves forcibly depriving students of their freedom of expression. Therefore, students in many schools in the United States held large-scale protests in solidarity with Columbia students, and at the same time demanded that the schools and Israeli companies draw a clear line and withdraw funds from investing in Israeli companies.
