Carragher: Liverpool are betting on the next Jurgen Klopp and I'd prefer Tuchel to come

author:Liverpool are not champions

Carragher wrote an article commenting on Liverpool's choice of Slote to succeed Jurgen Klopp, and the full text is shared as follows:

Liverpool's heavy defeat in the Merseyside derby may have only one consolation: replacing Jurgen Klopp is no longer an "impossible task".

At least on the pitch.

Reality is beating Liverpool. Despite the flaws in Liverpool's squad, they are still looking to beat Manchester City and Arsenal to win the title. Liverpool have never had the quality to win the title, they have too many flaws to sustain their challenge, and in fact, they have been in the title race for longer than expected.

Jurgen Klopp's successor now looks set to be Feyenoord's Slot, who still has a lot to improve on after a season where hopes are greater than reality. No coach coming to Anfield should think it's a far-fetched challenge to make himself better than Jurgen Klopp's final at Liverpool.

That's the good news. The bad news is that the man most capable of leading this Liverpool team to the next step is leaving.

If Jurgen Klopp is in charge next season, Liverpool will continue to push forward and challenge again at home and in Europe. With Slote, this absolute belief will give way to hope.

This is in no way a criticism of the incoming Dutchman. When Jurgen Klopp announced he was leaving the club and Xavi Alonso ruled himself out, Liverpool's options were limited. No matter how good Slote is, no one can win the league title or lead the team to the European final without strong qualifications. Liverpool's next coach is always highly regarded, but not necessarily exciting.

Klopp's aura, authority, and natural connection to supporters – this "X-factor" is so hard to replicate.

Since the news broke out of Slot, I've heard and read a lot of opinions that the choice makes tactical sense, and the stats about Feyenoord's style make him a good fit for Liverpool.

Slote is an appointment made with the mind rather than the heart, while Klopp's charm lies in the head and heart.

When Jurgen Klopp joined in 2015, Liverpool supporters were grateful that he had chosen the club, which he could have waited for any club in the world. When Slot arrives, he will be grateful to Liverpool for choosing him and will need to prove that Liverpool made the right choice.

The absence of an emotional connection is not new or strange. Most coaches at any club need to win the support of their fans when they arrive, and greatness is earned on their own, not overnight. Jurgen Klopp is an exception because he arrived here as a double winner of the Bundesliga and a Champions League master. Many people follow his work and believe that he was born to be Liverpool's manager.

For the first time since Rafael Benitez, who led Valencia to La Liga and Europa League triumphs, Liverpool have an elite coach in place, a manager to worry about opponents. Is the same with Slote? Slote's appointment is curious rather than exciting.

Over the past nine years, Liverpool have had one of the top two managers in the world. They are now betting on a big man instead of appointing a manager who has proven to be genuine.

I would consider a more holistic picture of a coach like Thomas Tuchel, who beat Pep Guardiola in the ultimate test like the Champions League final. Tuchel has been in charge of Jurgen Klopp at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund and has been in excellent form. Although it has not been a success at Bayern Munich this season, one need only look at Carlo Ancelotti and Unai Emery to see how the top coaches have bounced back from setbacks.

If another English club were to bring in Tuchel it would have made me believe they would improve significantly, but my feeling is that Liverpool don't want a coach who is difficult to navigate.

I'm more inclined to choose a winner who has proven but can be difficult to manage, rather than a coach who may be easy to manage but still needs to prove everything.

My main concern is: is Slote ready to head to England to compete with Pep Guardiola for the Premier League and Champions League?

Liverpool's new head coach must show from the start that he is here to win, not just to compete.

After the Klopp era, no one at Liverpool wanted to hear about the so-called transition period, consolidating the season or at least qualifying for the Champions League. Jurgen Klopp has re-built ambition and re-established Liverpool as a formidable team.

Now is not 2010, 2012 or 2015, when Liverpool will need a major rebuild. Liverpool have a foundation for improvement next season and are theoretically still in title contention with four games remaining, although they now need a series of unlikely outcomes to win the title.

Despite the changes at the top, the direction must be forward.

Liverpool seem to be entering an era where they want their manager's priority to be to prepare the team, with Edwards and Richard Hughes taking on most of the responsibility for building the team. The new leadership never seems to be trying to find the next Klopp, someone who will go and do the necessary "battles" to make sure the team meets his requirements.

It's a good idea in theory to appoint a manager who is obedient to the executives. In reality, sometimes the discourse changes quickly.

It would be naïve to think that a successful Liverpool coach will not be the face of the club, so that every word and deed will be recognized by the fans.

The head coach is pushed to the forefront, speaking at press conferences three times a week, and whether they or their owners like it or not, they are the face of the club. Their faces have to fit, they have to speak the language of the fans. It's not just Liverpool, I don't think any club or city can do that. It's the culture of the club and it's not going to change.

Jurgen Klopp never had to work on this, it was something he was born with.

For my former coaches, Houllier and Benitez, this has also evolved over time. Once they get their ground and win trophies, their relationship with Kop will empower them. Sometimes, people think they have too much power and control because the fans always stand up for their judgment and not the top.

The same is true of Klopp, who had previously left but returned immediately after Klopp's resignation, revealing a previous power struggle. Since Edwards' departure in 2022, Liverpool's recruitment policy has undoubtedly become more erratic, with the performance of big-money signings like Nunez lacking consistency to justify the transfer fee.

Slote will be a symbol of a new era and a different way for Liverpool to hope for success.

From 2006 to 2019, Liverpool only won the League Cup. They have won everything in the last five years and unfortunately did not win more.

Jurgen Klopp is the most important reason for their success. Once he leaves, it will not only be Slot's reputation that will be tested, but also those who believe Slot can succeed such a legendary manager.
