As part of the layoffs announced earlier this year, Microsoft may have shut down Bethesda France. Recently, there have been multiple online claims that Bethesda France is closed, but these messages have not been confirmed.
Microsoft announced mass layoffs back in January and revealed that it would lay off about 1,900 employees in 2024. The layoffs represent about 8% of Microsoft's workforce, but it did not specify which areas will be affected by the decision.
Now, there are new rumors that Microsoft may have shut down Bethesda France, 12 years after it was founded. According to Insider Gaming, multiple people took to social media to discuss the company's possible closure. Including former Bethesda France Country Manager Scotty Cool, who expressed regret for leaving the company after eight years on the job, and thanked players for their support. In a reply to Scotty's tweet, he confirmed that he left Bethesda France due to Microsoft's massive layoffs worldwide.
Even now, the full impact of Microsoft's layoffs remains unknown. However, the layoffs seem to have had a big impact on the gaming company's secondary areas, such as customer service, marketing, and publishing. For example, shortly after the announcement of the layoffs, news broke that most of Blizzard's customer support team had been laid off and that Microsoft planned to outsource some of the department's tasks.
In other cases, major projects have been canceled due to layoffs. One of the most striking examples is Blizzard's cancellation of an unannounced survival game. The project has been in development for more than five years. Currently, Bethesda is reported to be working on upcoming Raiders of the Lost Ark games, The Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 5 (which may be in pre-production), and other unconfirmed titles, but none of them seem to be affected by the layoffs.
