Blood transfusions play a vital role in health care, benefiting patients facing life-threatening conditions such as sickle cell anemia and thalassaemia, who need blood and its components. Transfusions of blood and blood products can help patients live longer and improve their quality of life. In addition, blood transfusions support complex medical procedures and surgical procedures, and are therefore indispensable for maternal and child health care, as well as during man-made and natural disasters.
Unfortunately, the demand for blood transfusions in many countries exceeds the supply. Blood services face challenges in providing enough blood while ensuring its quality and safety. Voluntary, unpaid blood donation is the foundation of a safe and adequate blood supply. In addition, voluntary unpaid plasma donation can also play a vital role in supporting patients with various long-term diseases, such as hemophilia and immunodeficiency.
During the Fifty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2005, the world's health ministers unanimously announced their commitment to and support voluntary blood donation. They adopted resolution WHA58.13 to designate June 14 as World Blood Donor Day. The resolution also urges Member States to implement and support well-organized, nationally coordinated and sustainable blood service programmes, with appropriate regulatory oversight, so that safe blood can be collected to meet the needs of patients.

The focus of this year's campaign:
2024 marks the 20th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day. This is an important moment to reflect on achievements, address challenges, and look ahead to a future where access to safe blood transfusion is available. The slogan for this year's global campaign, "Celebrating Giving for 20 Years: Thank You, Blood Donors!", commemorates the milestone of 20 years and highlights the profound impact blood donation has on the lives of patients and donors. The campaign provides an opportunity to show appreciation to blood, plasma, and platelet donors around the world for their life-saving donations. In addition, it is a call to action to inspire more people to join the global blood donation movement.
Activities may include commemorations, conferences and workshops, donor appreciation ceremonies, social networking campaigns, special media broadcasts, music and art events to thank blood donors, publication of relevant stories and other activities that contribute to the theme of this year's World Blood Donor Day. Blood service and donor organizations are encouraged to use this opportunity to share experiences among peers, engage donors, and find new ways to attract new donors, increase donor satisfaction, and promote donor loyalty.
