L'Ecute Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr is a military academy with a long history, along with West Point in the United States and Sandhurst Military Academy in the United Kingdom. Founded by Napoleon in 1803, it was the first professional military education institution in France to train infantry and cavalry officers, and has become a pre-appointment educational institution for the entire army. In its early years, the college was located in the town of Saint-Cyr, near the Palace of Versailles, outside Paris, hence its name.
