Typical cases involving rumors

One of them was carried out by the Hefei police in Anhui Province

The cracked cases have attracted attention

Web bloggers tamper with the facts of the fire

Concocted to spread rumors

On January 25 this year, a fire broke out in a warehouse in Jiahai Industrial Park, Xinzhan District, Hefei City, Anhui Province. The fire department quickly rushed to the scene after receiving the alarm, and with the efforts of the firefighters, the fire was quickly controlled and extinguished. Hefei Fire issued a fire alarm notice on the same day: the fire burned an area of about 470 square meters, no casualties, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

These are all fakes!

On the same day, a news about the fire appeared on an online platform, which said: A fire broke out in Jiahai Industrial Park, Xinzhan Station, Yaohai District, Hefei, Anhui Province, causing many casualties, and the specific number of casualties has not yet been announced. As soon as this post was released, it immediately attracted widespread attention, and the description of "huge casualties" made netizens very worried.

This discrepancy with the fire report immediately attracted the attention of the Hefei police. After investigation, the police found that the blogger who posted the online rumor was named "Flying Fish", located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and the area where the post appeared was not the actual place where the fire occurred.

In the end, the police determined that this post was an Internet rumor, and imposed an administrative punishment on the online blogger Lin Moumou who spread the rumors in accordance with the law. At present, the content of Lin Moumou's rumors has been deleted.

These are all fakes!

A fire that originally broke out in Hefei, Anhui Province, was tampered with by an online blogger in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and arbitrarily fabricated the facts, and then posted and spread on the Internet. How did such a rumor come about?

Earn manuscript fees to earn traffic

Using AI tools to spread rumors and deliberately exaggerate descriptions

According to the police, the online blogger "Flying Fish" used AI software to assist in generating such information in batches. The blogger saw the report of the fire in Hefei through the short video platform, so he intercepted the pictures of the relevant media reports, copied part of the text in the report, and then put the content into the AI software to generate articles and publish them on the online platform through his account.

According to the police, after AI expansion, the text of the report was directly expanded from the original casualties to "causing many casualties, and the specific number of casualties has not yet been announced". In order to enrich the content of the post, the suspect expanded it again and added some relevant content related to the arrival of the government and fire departments to deal with it. The suspect published the article that he had expanded for the second time, and the rumor post appeared.

Blogger Lin Moumou said that at that time, he only wanted to make the content of the fire article richer in order to increase the number of views, and did not seriously verify the true situation of the fire.

These are all fakes!

The police found that Lin Moumou also deliberately used some extremely exaggerated words to describe when posting. To highlight the severity of the fire, he wrote in a post: "Many people lost their homes and jobs in this fire, causing huge casualties and property damage. He also accompanied several pictures of the scene of the fire with thick smoke billowing and wrote in red letters, "Whether there are casualties, the situation is unknown." And Lin Moumou's original intention in doing this was to take posting as a side hustle and earn manuscript fees.

These are all rumors, don't believe them!

In addition to this case, there are some rumors concocted by bloggers on the Internet recently to earn traffic -

  • Myth 1: "There are no roads, traffic lights are on"

On March 10, an online blogger posted a video of "There is no road and the traffic light is on", which attracted the attention of netizens.

After an investigation by the police in Jinzhai County, Anhui Province, it was found that the road section was a T-shaped intersection designed by the traffic department, and the traffic lights were mainly used to guide the traffic of left and right turning vehicles, and also reserved a traffic plan for the later implementation of the road. The online blogger selectively filmed from specific angles without verification, and published false information, causing a bad social impact. At present, blogger Sheng Moumou has been punished by the Jinzhai County police in accordance with the law.

  • Rumor 2: "People from other provinces come to Teng County to steal children"

In March, the Wuzhou Internet Police in Guangxi Province found that 7 people, including Zhong Moumou and Yu Moumou in Teng County, posted videos and articles on the short video platform and official account that "people from other provinces came to Teng County to steal children".

After police investigation and verification, the video and article were actually 7 people including Zhong Moumou and Yu Moumou splicing together a good person and good deed into an Internet rumor of so-called "stealing children", and spread it. At present, 7 people involved in the case, including Zhong Moumou, have been punished by the police and ordered to delete the false video information.

  • Myth 3: "Compulsory Education Reform Shortens School Duration"

In January this year, Nanjing Sun, Suzhou Li and others, in order to achieve the purpose of winning attention and increasing real estate sales, fabricated and disseminated rumors and information such as "compulsory education reform shortens the school system" and "high schools are included in compulsory education, and Nanjing is piloting in Xuanwu District", causing adverse social impact and disrupting public order. At present, 7 people, including Sun and Li, have been administratively punished by the police in accordance with the law.

Be wary of online rumors that use AI to fabricate facts

In response to the online rumors of using AI to "wash manuscripts" and fabricate news facts, the police reminded the majority of netizens:

  • When browsing information on the Internet, it is necessary to maintain vigilance against information sources, and try to choose authoritative and trustworthy media or institutions as information sources;
  • It is necessary to pay attention to the logic of online news information, if it is found that there are obvious loopholes or contradictions in the logic of a piece of news information, it is likely to have been tampered with or fabricated;
  • Remember not to blindly believe and spread unverified information. When you see suspicious information on social media or the Internet, you can verify it first or wait for official information to be released before making a judgment.
