The origin of the soup cup

The Tomyou Cup, short for Thomas Cup and Uber Cup, is the world's highest-level men's and women's badminton team competition, and is known as the "Three Major Badminton Cups" together with the Sudirman Cup.

The Thomas Cup Badminton Tournament is the World Men's Badminton Team Championships, which was founded in 1948 by the former International Badminton Federation. When the International Badminton Federation was founded in 1934, Briton George Thomas was elected president. Five years later, at the BWF meeting, Thomas proposed that the time was ripe to organize a world men's team competition, and said that he would donate a trophy for the competition, called the "Thomas Cup".

The format of the Tongyou Cup

The Tongyou Cup is divided into three stages: preliminaries, semi-finals and finals. In addition to the top four teams in the Asian and European Championships, the champions, hosts and defending champions of the five continents are automatically qualified, and the remaining quota places are determined according to the team ranking (the three singles and two doubles pairs with the highest points).

The matches are all played in a best-of-five format (played in one unit of time), i.e. three singles and two doubles. There are six types of competition sequences, the purpose of which is to ensure that athletes participating in both competitions have at least 30 minutes of rest.

The Tang You Cup and the Sudirman Cup

The Tongyou Cup differs mainly from the Sudirman Cup in terms of the players and the timing of the competition.

The Sudirman Cup is a mixed team badminton tournament consisting of five events: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Both the Tongyou Cup and the Sudirman Cup are held every two years, with the Tongyou Cup being held in even-numbered years and the Sudirman Cup being held in odd-numbered years.
