As we all know, tap water has to go through a series of treatments and tests before it flows into thousands of households, but few people understand what the "gatekeepers" of water quality do on a daily basis. As the backbone of the central laboratory business of Chongming Water Supply Co., Ltd., 29-year-old Chen Jiaying has been engaged in water quality testing for 7 years. ”
Protecting the safety of drinking water for residents day in and day out starts with sampling
For Chen Jiaying, she spends holidays and weekends in the laboratory, "The nature of our work is quite special, to ensure the safety of drinking water for all residents on the island, and we can't stop for a day." Chen Jiaying said.
The central laboratory of Chongming Water Supply Co., Ltd. is located in the Chengqiao Water Plant on Gulangyu Road, Chengqiao Town, and undertakes the water quality testing of raw water, factory water, emergency water and water at the end of the pipe network of Chongming's "one reservoir and four plants" ("one reservoir" refers to Dongfeng Xisha Reservoir; "four plants" refers to Chengqiao Water Plant, Chenjiazhen Water Plant, Baozhen Water Plant and Chongxi Water Plant), checks the water purification process of the water plant, and ensures the drinking water safety of the residents of the whole island, which is also the daily work content of Chen Jiaying.
On Saturday, April 13, at 8:30 a.m., when the reporter met Chen Jiaying at the Chengqiao Water Plant, she was wearing a white coat and using a sampling bottle to receive water under the faucet in the raw water pump room for sampling. "The water coming out of the sampling tap now is the raw water from the Dongfeng Xisha Reservoir. Chen Jiaying said that after the completion of the Dongfeng Xisha Reservoir in 2014, high-quality Yangtze River raw water was supplied to four water plants on Chongming Island through a raw water pipeline of more than 60 kilometers. The quality of raw water is directly related to the quality of the factory water, and it needs to be sampled and tested every day like the factory water and inland river emergency water.
While receiving water, Chen Jiaying recorded the values of 7.9 and 17.9NTU displayed on the PH online detector and turbidity online detector next to the faucet. "The two instruments monitor the quality of the raw water 24 hours a day. Now our factory water is generally stable at about 7.5, which is weakly alkaline, which is good for human health. Chen Jiaying explained to reporters, "17.9NTU refers to the turbidity of the water, and the smaller the value, the clearer the water." After the sedimentation and sand filtration of the water plant, the turbidity of the factory water can reach about 0.1NTU, which is far lower than the Shanghai local standard of 0.5NTU. After recording these values, Chen Jiaying returned to the laboratory for secondary testing and manual comparison to ensure the accuracy of the online data and the normal operation of the instrument.
As a water quality assayer, Chen Jiaying faces a large number of tests every day. "In addition to pH and turbidity, we will also test 18 indicators such as ammonia nitrogen, chloride, total hardness, and total number of colonies in raw water, factory water and inland emergency water on a daily basis, and conduct 49 tests and analyses on water samples from Chongming Island every month, and conduct 97 full analyses of water quality twice a year in accordance with the provisions of the new national standard. Chen Jiaying said, "In order to ensure the safety of water supply quality, the tap water delivered to thousands of households every day must be tested and analyzed in strict accordance with the process, from water sample collection, to on-site analysis, to laboratory analysis, and finally to review and report the test results. ”
Practice makes perfect, a good hand for time optimization configuration
After collecting three water samples, including raw water, inland river emergency water and factory water, Chen Jiaying immediately returned to the laboratory to devote herself to the busy testing work. Classify different water samples, accurately measure and pour water samples into the corresponding glass triangular flasks, test tubes and other testing containers. Some are put into the instrument to read the data directly, and some are dropped into a certain amount of chemical reagents according to the different test items, shaken, stirred, observe the color change of the chemical reaction, read and record the data, and put in the formula to calculate and record the results...... All operations are done in one go. In about an hour, Chen Jiaying completed the detection of 9 items, including permanganate index, nitrite content, total alkalinity, ammonia nitrogen, turbidity, total hardness, chloride, total chlorine, and PH value.
"The length of the test project varies, some need to be tested with precision instruments, some need to be manually titrated for testing, some need to be heated at high temperatures first, and some need to wait for precipitation. Chen Jiaying said, "In order to improve the efficiency of testing, I will intersperse laboratory tests." For example, to detect the permanganate index, generally speaking, it is to detect the organic content in the water, which needs to be heated by a water bath to fully react with the chemical reagent, and it takes 30 minutes to heat the water bath. Of course, controlling the time in the experimental process requires us to be very familiar with the testing process, and at the same time use the time difference to make a good plan, so that the experimental efficiency is greatly improved. ”
Such skilled operation skills and reasonable allocation of testing time are accumulated by Chen Jiaying in 7 years. After graduating from university in 2017, Chen Jiaying joined Chongming Water Supply Co., Ltd., and successively interned and worked in Dongfeng Xisha Reservoir Laboratory, Chongxi Water Plant Laboratory and Central Laboratory of Water Supply Company. Recalling the days when she first started her internship, Chen Jiaying told reporters with a smile: "At the beginning, I was in a hurry, my hands were shaking when I took a graduated straw to test water samples, and the bottles and cans clanged for a while, but then I gradually became proficient." ”
Water quality testing is a seemingly simple but tedious job, but Chen Jiaying said that it is a very interesting thing, "Every day is very fulfilling, starting from the morning sampling, one by one, each data is accurate, there is no error, I feel a little proud." ”
When ordinary things are done to the extreme, they become extraordinary
For Chen Jiaying for 7 years, in the busy and focused work, this "flick of the fingers" is also the heavy youth she has paid for the construction of Chongming Ecological Island. Now Chen Jiaying has practiced the "stunt" of fast and accurate water quality detection, and the data accuracy rate of 49 test items per month is 100%, which is not only the "master" of water quality testing, but also the deputy director of the central laboratory of Chongming Water Supply Co., Ltd.
Conscientious, rigorous, hard-working, is the most evaluation of her by colleagues. Chen Jiaying's colleague Huang Jie told reporters that what she admired most was Chen Jiaying's perseverance, in order to make a near-perfect "marking" in the experiment, she did it several times if she didn't succeed once, until she achieved that near-perfect value.
This dedication has motivated Chen Jiaying to continuously improve her skills. Through her own efforts, she has obtained the third-level chemical inspector certificate and pressure vessel operation certificate, and has won many good results in the vocational skills competitions held by the company and the industry, won the silver medal of the 2023 Shanghai Water Supply Industry Chemical Inspector Vocational Skills Competition, and was also awarded the honorary titles of "Chongming Craftsman of the Year 2021" and "Technical Expert of Shanghai Water Affairs Bureau".
Chen Jiaying said that Chongming is very similar to her hometown of Lianyungang, with a good environment, good air and a slow pace of life. In her spare time, she can go camping in the park with her friends, enjoy the sunset at a café on the riverbank, and taste the specialties at a country house, Chongming has long since become her second home.
The day-to-day testing work is ordinary, and it is extremely extraordinary to build the first safety barrier for the people of Chongming to drink high-quality water and rest assured water. Chen Jiaying shines silently in an ordinary post and is positive in life, she said: "I want ordinary things to be done to the extreme, and they become extraordinary." ”
