The four-time LCK champion Chovy
Chovy was promoted to the LCK in 2018 with Griffin, and at the age of 17, like most esports prodigies, he embarked on the path of esports at his best age. However, he was not able to win the World Championship early on his debut like Faker and Showmaker. On the contrary, it has been 6 years since his debut and he has not won anything at the World Championships. However, compared to the early years when he was in Griffin, he didn't have any bragging capital, at least this season he completed an unprecedented 4 consecutive championships in the LCK. In the span of the three seasons from 2022 to 2024, he is the only constant mid-laner core of GenG.
With the addition of Kiin, Canyon and old teammate Lehends this year, Chovy seems to have a luxury lineup that can compete for the world championship. Looking back at his 5 teammates, this year is probably the strongest one, and if S14 still doesn't work, then I'm afraid there will be no hope in the second half of his career.
First Teammate (2018-2019)
The first teammates when they entered the LCK in the 2018 Summer Tournament, except for the top laner Sword, the other four are very competitive in today's professional circles, among which ADC player Viper is also the only player who has won the World Championship so far. This Griffin team has been the runner-up in the LCK in its heyday, and the three-game runner-up in 2018-2019 also led to the internal conflict that broke out in the team later, and finally disbanded.
Many people attribute Griffin's untitled problem to the top laner, and a large part of this is due to the fact that Sword met IG's Theshy at the World Finals on behalf of Griffin. Although Chovy had to take the blame for the unusually unconventional selection of bastard heroes in the first key game that year, the gap between Sword and Theshy attracted all the firepower and was also the key to Griffin's collapse in 2020.
In the transfer period at the end of 2019, taking advantage of the opportunity of the club's problems to FA all players, Chovy decisively left the team and joined DRX.
Second Teammate (2020)
Chovy proved his worth after leaving Griffin, joining DRX in 2020 and finishing third in the spring and second in the summer with Doran, Pyosik, Deft and Keria, and advanced to the S10 World Finals.
Although his teammates were indeed not particularly ideal, and DRX officials always created the atmosphere of Deft's last dance to retire that year, Chovy himself still failed to get out of Griffin much, and there were still problems such as obsession with mending knives and stealth in key games. There's no doubt about the ability to line up, it's just that as a team, it's hard for Chovy to have a positive feedback side.
The Third Teammate (2021)
The Korean version of the brothers lol, Chovy and Deft have been tied together for 2 consecutive seasons. Interestingly, after the separation, it was Deft who won the championship in S12. After the last dance of DRX in 2020, Deft and Chovy danced for the last time at HEL, and they can still get a spot in the World Finals, but it is still a season without a championship for Chovy. Compared with the S10 season, this teammate is even worse, and he was easily eliminated by T1 in the World Finals or the quarterfinals.
Fourth Teammate (2022-2023)
Doran, Peanut, Ruler and Lehends, the lineup when Chovy first joined GenG in 2022, also looks much stronger than in the past two years. Although S12 lost to T1 in the spring, they finally won the summer tournament. This is not only GenG's first league title, but also the first LCK championship for the team's four other players except for Peanut.
In 2023, due to Ruler's departure to join JDG, GenG has made minor adjustments to the lineup. The duo became rookies Peyz and Delight, and Uenakano remained the same. The GenG team continued to win back-to-back LCK titles, though they were eliminated by BLG on both occasions at MSI and the World Finals. Even with a good star teammate and three consecutive league titles, Chovy still couldn't win anything at Worlds.
Chovy and this GenG team have also slowly confirmed the title of the king of the civil war, especially after T1 defeated the LPL to win the championship S13, the evaluation of GenG in the Korean division is "an expert in the civil war, and an outsider in the foreign war". The only good news for Chovy in 2023 is that he won the Asian Games, and he is still the starter, a real national team gold medal, and he is exempt from military service.
Fifth Teammate (2024)
Kiin, who wasted too much youth, Canyon, who left his comfort zone to want the championship, and Lehends, who returned to support his old friends, except for Peyz, who was a bit of a team hole, Chovy seemed to have ushered in the strongest teammate of his career. In the 2024 Spring Split, Chovy and GenG defeated T1 in the finals for the fourth time in a row, winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive championship in the LCK. These league titles were no longer enough for Chovy, but before he won the Worlds, he and GenG still couldn't take off the label of civil war.
MSI, Esports World Cup, Summer Tournament, World Finals, with good teammates and good form, Chovy may have one last chance for him if he wants to realize his ambitions. Even if there are good teammates in the future, it will only get harder and harder to win the championship as you get older.
