IPR Daily对话周兴

In the field of intellectual property, the mainland has solved the problem of "starting from scratch" and has come to a critical period of shifting from quantity to quality. In 2024, LexisNexis®Legal & Professional released the "2024 Innovation Momentum: Global Top 100" report, which distinguishes small patent portfolios with high "quality" and well-maintained large patent portfolios, and selects the top 100 companies that are constantly innovating in their respective fields based on the patent asset index, and Jereh Group has been ranked on the list for two consecutive years.

Mr. Zhou Xing is the Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Jereh Group, with more than 20 years of experience in large enterprises and Fortune 500 companies, and has held senior positions in well-known enterprises such as ZTE and TCL. Taking this opportunity, LexisNexis® IP Solutions invited IPR Daily to have a conversation with Mr. Zhou Xing to share Jereh Group's experience of winning the Global Top 100 Innovators again.

In this dialogue, Mr. Zhou Xing shared the secret of Jereh Group's success in ranking among the "Top 100 Global Innovators" for two consecutive years, elaborated on the company's strategy in patent layout, artificial intelligence application and global development, and emphasized the importance of corporate culture as its core competitiveness. Mr. Zhou Xing believes that focusing on market competition and focusing on the commercial value and litigation value of patents are the key to Jereh Group's innovative achievements.

The following is a transcript of the conversation:

IPR DAILY: Jereh Group has won the Global Top 100 Most Innovative Companies award for two consecutive years, what kind of management experience do you have in terms of IP?

Mr. Zhou Xing: I am also a little surprised that Jereh Group has won the award for two consecutive years, because we do not take any award as the starting point of our work. We have always been driven by the competitive landscape facing the industry. More and more Chinese companies are beginning to realize the importance of intellectual property rights, especially patents, for business development. We are able to compete with the world's leading companies because we are as innovative as they are, and even better than others. Nowhere else in the North American, Russian or Middle Eastern markets can do this. I think Jereh Group won the award because we did what we had to do: focus on market competition, R&D, apply and protect innovations that can bring us competitiveness. At the same time, more and more Chinese companies are working in this direction, which is also the path that must be adhered to to participate in global competition.

IPR DAILY: How do you think future technology trends will affect Jereh Group's patent strategy and IP management, and will Jereh Group adjust its strategy to adapt to these changes?

Mr. Zhou Xing: The future development trend of technology can be viewed from two aspects. The first is industrial intelligence, including the huge impact of artificial intelligence models on the industry. The entire process of our oil and gas exploitation, including the use of equipment, monitoring, safe operation and other aspects, will be intelligent and networked. Only by seizing this development window can we occupy the commanding heights in the future. We also see that IP risks in the communications field may be transmitted to more traditional industries through intelligence, for example, after the development of automobiles to the intelligent stage, the patentees of standard essential patents begin to charge automakers, which may also be the situation we will face in the future.

In addition to the trend of intelligence, we have also noticed the application prospects of artificial intelligence technology in the field of intellectual property. Whether it is patent search, analysis and drafting, or agency, AI has a broad scope for practice. For Jereh Group, we need to adapt to the trend of the times, seize the opportunity, upgrade the tools and workflows, and make better use of the tools to enhance the competitiveness of intellectual property.

IPR DAILY: HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE QUALITY OF YOUR PATENT PORTFOLIO, AND WHAT STRATEGIES DO YOU USE TO MAINTAIN A HIGH-VALUE PATENT PORTFOLIO?

Mr. Zhou Xing: First of all, I believe that the quality and value of patents are not exactly the same, and the value of patents needs to be observed from the perspective of competition. We also agree with Huawei's Dr. Song Liuping that patents that surround competitors are good patents. Compared with the patent reserves of thousands or even tens of thousands of patents in some industries, the scale of Jereh's patents is not large. However, we note that most of our major competitors have patent inventories in the order of a few hundred. Therefore, relatively speaking, Jereh Group's patent reserve still has a certain leading edge. Of course, for us, the most important thing is to create patents that can fight (litigation), and we will also clean up those patents that are not very useful. It's a focused process that focuses resources and energy on patents with litigation value. This kind of patent upgrading and management process has always been the focus of Jereh's work.

In fact, Jereh Group is handling a number of patent litigations. The essence of patents is to reflect market competition, so we value the contribution of patents to market value more than using patents to obtain direct benefits.

Jereh Group was not even involved in the oilfield equipment business when it was first established, but started as a small trading company, and now some of our equipment has occupied a large market share in China, and we also have a relatively leading market position in overseas regions such as the United States and the Middle East. From the perspective of the overall development of the company, it is in the process of continuous innovation that we can continue to lead the market, meet customer needs and win recognition.

We believe that the core competitiveness of Jereh Group does not lie in the technology, market or intellectual property rights that we already have certain advantages. The core competitiveness of Jereh Group is our corporate culture. We believe that the healthier Jereh's corporate culture is, the more we practice it, and the more competitive we will be. We also believe that Jereh's vision of becoming a company respected by people of all colors around the world will be realized.
