This is a scene described by the writer Jia Pingwa in "Waste Capital", this private trading market is actually hidden in the Xicang downtown of Xi'an.

Xicang

Bustling authentic Xi'an fireworks alley

Xicang, which is the most crowded and noisy place in Xi'an, is also the place with the strongest fireworks in Xi'an.

Thursday and Sunday are market days in Xicang. On the morning of April 14th, the Huashang Daily Gale News reporter went out of Exit B of Sajinqiao Station of Metro Line 1, and turned left into Sajinqiao Street with the bustling flow of people. The reporter asked a few people randomly, and one of them was a girl from Chengdu who said: "I saw Xi'an Xicang food on the Internet, and I came here, but I didn't expect it to be so popular, and I have been queuing for 15 minutes." ”

Continue along the Sajin Bridge and enter the food paradise, one by one: Lao Majia cured beef, meatball Hu spicy soup, noodle soup sheep blood, Ma Er dumplings, persimmon cake paste, sour plum soup......

What's more distinctive is the sound of selling in the Shaanxi dialect: selling retort cakes~, camellia twist~, powder soup sheep blood~, haha spicy noodles...... One after another, lead you into an authentic Xi'an fireworks street - Xicang.

Xicang, located in the northwest corner of the Xi'an city wall, is under the jurisdiction of Lianhu District, and is located in the south of the west section of Lianhu Road, the north of the middle section of Miaohou Street, the east of Sajinqiao Road, and the west of Xicang East Lane. In fact, the "Xicang" category includes four alleys, namely Xicang East Lane, Xicang South Lane, Xicang West Lane, and Xicang North Lane, as well as several adjacent streets and alleys such as Laowu Lane, Sajin Bridge, Miaohou Street, and School Gate, which enclose a unique small trader distribution center, which winds like a labyrinth, covering an area of about 2 square kilometers. There is a world here, from second-hand electric tricycles and bicycles, to small needles and threads, used books and magazines, calligraphy, paintings, literary toys, antique players, non-staple food and flowers, daily necessities, etc.

Of course, the most famous thing in Xicang is the flower, bird, fish and insect market, commonly known as the "bird market", and there are many small birds, chickens and small fish sold on the street. The Old Poplar Bird Shop is one of them, with a variety of bird cages hanging on the branches and shelves in front of the door, attracting tourists to stop and take pictures, and the wall painting on the diagonal opposite side is impressively visible.

Xicang has always maintained the tradition of opening the market on Thursdays and Sundays, rain or shine. There is no charge for the management of the market, and gradually small traders are gathering more and more. On the day of the fair, the flow of people is generally at 10 o'clock in the morning, and people shopping and eating in several streets and alleys are shoulder to shoulder.

Vicissitudes of history Xi'an "Yongfeng Cang" royal heritage

According to Jiajing's "Shaanxi Tongzhi" in the "Ming Xi'an City Map", there are Yongfeng Cang and Tuntian Road in the area of Xicang. Yongfeng warehouse to collect grain, mediate market prices, Tuntian Road is the Ming Dynasty Shaanxi branch of the official office in charge of Tuntian affairs, by the political department, the head of the council, responsible for the management of grain reserves, open up the wasteland, grain production, water conservancy and irrigation, etc.

Yongfeng Cang, was placed in the third year of Emperor Wen of Sui (583 AD), located in the northeast of Huaxian County, Weishui south bank of Guangtong canal, the original name of Guangtong Cang, Emperor Yang of Sui changed its name to Yongfeng Cang, an important granary near the Beijing Division at that time, later Weishui moved south, Yongfeng Cang site is separated in the north of the Wei River in the territory of Dali County, Shaanxi. During the Song and Yuan dynasties, there was a "Fengchuan Station" here, which was mainly responsible for conveying official documents to the outside world and providing food and lodging for officials. In the early years of the Ming Dynasty, Yongfeng Cang was moved to the northwest of the Buzheng Division in Xi'an City, which was the main warehouse of Xi'an Prefecture, and stored the grain levied by the Prefecture and was under the jurisdiction of Xi'an Prefecture.

The use of Yongfeng warehouse continued until the Qing Dynasty, and there were also standing and wide reserve warehouses nearby. During the Yongzheng period, Yongfeng Cang was under the jurisdiction of the grain road, and Jiaqing's "Chang'an County Chronicles, Ya Zhi Zhi" recorded: "Yongfeng Cang is in Baoning in the city, which belongs to the grain road. "The kiln is a horizontal rectangular building, about 280 meters long from east to west, about 200 meters wide from north to south, and is surrounded by tall warehouse walls. At the same time, according to the "Ming and Qing Xi'an Dictionary", in the four lanes of Xicang, Xicang South Lane was also called "Xicang Gate" because it was located in front of Yongfeng Cangmen, and was renamed Xicang South Lane in 1981. In the "Xi'an Mansion Map" in the 19th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, there is not only the mark of Yongfengcang, but also around it, there are four lanes in the east, west, south and north, however, Tuntian Road is difficult to find in this map.

Corresponding to the "Xicang" and "Xicangmen", there are Dongcang and Dongcangmen, Jinglucang (near today's Dongcangmen) in the area under the jurisdiction of Xianning County in Qing Dynasty is located to the east and is called "Dongcang"; Yongfeng Cang is relatively close to the west and is called "Xicang". The West Warehouse serves as the state's warehouse, and the nearby school yard regularly conducts military drills.

Until the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xicang was still a warehouse of the grain department; during the period of state-owned economy, the grain depot in Xicang was turned into a military depot and became a military management area. The market in the Xichang area was interrupted for a time. It was not until 1978 after the reform and opening up that Xicang gradually regained its former vitality.

In recent years, in addition to flowers, birds, insects and fish, jade antiques, hardware department stores, daily necessities, used books and newspapers, clothing and decorations, needles and threads, second-hand electrical appliances, etc. have gradually entered, and Xicang has become a real free market.

Cultural and creative park to enhance the cultural connotation of Xicang Bazaar

Today's Xicang is one of the places where many young people take photos and check in. Wang Zhi, vice chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Association and an expert on intangible cultural heritage, said that the folk assembly in Xicang has been formed for a hundred years, reflecting the relatively ancient urban market culture of Xi'an, which is also a microcosm of the history and culture of the old city of Xi'an.

At the beginning of this year, Xicang set out to build a cultural and creative park. Hu Jia, chairman of Xi'an Lianhu Cultural Tourism Group Co., Ltd., said that the cultural and creative park currently under construction is located in Xicang South Lane, covering an area of 35 acres, in accordance with the concept of "new community connection + new market culture + new scene consumption", Xicang Market Cultural and Creative Park will focus on creating a "new scene of complex cultural consumption", by retaining historical traces, so that traditional culture is more textured, and the park is expected to be officially opened at the end of this year or early next year. At that time, come to Xicang again, look at the adjacent stalls and ancient objects, and listen to the unique shouts, which will definitely make people forget to return.
