Did you know that Sabah has a total of three World Heritage Sites?

Mount Kinabalu Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 2 December 2000, the first World Heritage Site in Malaysia, while the Crocker Mountains were inscribed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2014 and Mount Kinabalu Park was declared a UNESCO Global Geopark on 24 May last year.

With the re-designation of Mount Kinabalu Park as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the area under its management and protection has been expanded sixfold from the original 75,370 hectares of Mount Kinabalu Park to the surrounding area, including some of the same geological value sites in Kota Maurud, Lanau and Kota Maru. Sabah has also become the third site in the world to receive a triple UNESCO award.

Mount Kinabalu Park is a forest reserve located at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, covering an area of 754 square kilometres, from the plains to the highest peak, Mount Sabah (Roche Peak), and has four different climatic zones, making it one of the richest forests in the world in terms of flora and fauna, with 326 species of birds, more than 100 species of mammals, and more than 110 species of snails, making it an important habitat for endemic species in Borneo.

In addition to being the entrance to climbing Mount Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu Park is also a paradise for lovers of nature and outdoor activities. There are many types of accommodation available, as well as restaurants and an exhibition center. Visitors can explore the park on their own, or take an eco-guided tour. There are 9 different types of eco-guided trails, which range from 20 minutes to 2-3 hours.

Crocker Mountains: UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The largest mountain range in Sabah and known as the "backbone" of Sabah, the Crocker Ranges cover a vast area spanning several districts including Penampang, Tuaran, Lannau, Tambunam, Gendibit, Tannang, Pao Phor and Barpa. This geological miracle was formed 15 million years ago and is home to Sabah's highest mountain, Mount Mt. Trusmadi, the second highest peak. Trusmadi) and the fourth highest peak, Mount Tambuyugon (Mt. Trusmadi). Tambuyukon is also located in the Crocker Mountains.

The Crocker Mountains National Park was established in 1984 and was listed as a UNESCO Bioshpere Reserve in 2014. The park covers an area of 139,919 hectares and spans eight counties, stretching from northeast to southwest, with terrain ranging from 100 meters to 2,050 meters above sea level. Most of the park is covered with forests, which is also an important water conservation area in Sabah and is the source of five major rivers on the Shabah coast.

It's the perfect place for forest hiking, outdoor activities, camping, bird watching, and a chance to catch a glimpse of the Rafflesia flower, commonly known as the "Rafflesia". The park headquarters is located 14 kilometers on the outskirts of the root bite (about 25 minutes by car). In addition to accommodation and restaurant services, there are also botanical pavilions, insect aquariums, forest trails, observation towers, etc., so that visitors can get closer to nature.
