In the history of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, General Li Lianghui is a remarkable figure. In 1961, at the age of 21, he joined the Airborne Forces, and with his outstanding military quality and cultural level, he became the youngest commander in the army 22 years later, and showed his style in the National Day parade in 1984. However, a military vehicle bombing in Xinjiang in 2000 turned his military career around. Why did this general, who was deeply loved by soldiers, choose to retire at the peak of his career?
General Li Lianghui was born in 1940 in Shenzhou City, Hebei Province, during a war-torn period when China was in the midst of the difficult years of the War of Resistance Against Japan. The young Li Lianghui witnessed the suffering of his hometown in the war, and this profound experience inspired his strong patriotic feelings and strengthened his determination to join the army and defend the motherland in the future.
With the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the domestic situation gradually stabilized, and the education system was restored and developed. Li Lianghui, like other children, walked into the school with hope for the future, with the dream of in-depth study. His school days were filled with renewed hope and enthusiasm, eager to change the fate of himself and his family through knowledge.
However, fate always seems to play tricks on people. Li Lianghui's family's financial situation gradually deteriorated, forcing him to make the difficult decision to give up his studies. At that time, it was not easy for an ordinary family to maintain a basic life, and Li Lianghui chose to drop out of school to reduce the financial pressure on his family, which was undoubtedly a huge blow to him who was full of dreams.
As a young man, Li Lianghui longed for a higher education, but financial constraints forced him to give up this opportunity to his younger brothers and sisters, and he dropped out of school at the age of 18 to become an apprentice in an auto repair shop in the Beijing Military Region.
Although the days of working in the repair shop were monotonous, Li Lianghui got along with many soldiers in military uniforms every day, which deepened his yearning for a military career. Attracted by the sassy and heroic appearance of the soldiers, he decided to follow his childhood dream and aspire to join the military. After three years of hard work and self-improvement, Li Lianghui successfully joined the Airborne Forces and began his military career.
In 1961, at the age of 21, Li Lianghui voluntarily signed up for the Chinese People's Liberation Army and was assigned to the Airborne Forces. Here he not only received rigorous basic training, but also demonstrated his tactical acumen and leadership potential. In the course of harsh training and actual combat exercises, Li Lianghui constantly made breakthroughs in himself, displayed extraordinary physical fitness and psychological endurance, and gradually emerged as a member of the troops.
Li Lianghui's life in the airborne troops was arduous and harsh, and he set extremely high standards for himself, and through unremitting efforts, his military quality and physical fitness were markedly improved. In recognition of his military qualities and leadership in 1968, he was promoted to platoon commander and soon after as a company instructor, responsible for the basic training and ideological education of recruits.
Although he was strict with the soldiers during his training, he was very concerned about the soldiers in private, often asking about their families and offering possible help, and won the respect of many soldiers. This affinity and sense of responsibility led to his growing popularity in the military. A few years later, even though Li Lianghui was exceptionally promoted to regiment commander, he still maintained his care for the recruits and never put on a show. This unhurried attitude and perseverance led to his promotion to deputy commander of the Airborne Forces at the age of 36.
After becoming the deputy commander, Li Lianghui did not change his true colors because of his high position. He was known for his low-key style and humble personality in the army. Even when he met his former comrades, he always greeted them warmly, showing respect and care for everyone. However, it was this humility and integrity that led him to violently refute the improper decisions of his superiors at a military meeting because of his insistence on justice, which caused an uproar.
In the large-scale military exercise held in North China in 1981, the 15th Army of the Airborne Forces was responsible for completing the rigorous drill tasks in the morning, participating in a grand parade walking ceremony in the evening, and being inspected by senior leaders. There was a lively discussion about who should lead the evening's columns, and everyone involved wanted to be able to lead this important task.
At this critical moment, Li Lianghui stepped forward and voluntarily took on this heavy burden, and he firmly expressed his willingness to continue to lead the evening parade after completing the arduous exercises during the day. Although some colleagues, out of concern for his physical strength and energy, suggested that someone else should take on the tasks at night, Li Lianghui insisted that according to the instructions of his superiors, it was necessary for the military leaders to personally lead the team.
Toward the end of the discussion, a senior military leader tried to dissuade Mr. Li, suggesting that he should not pursue too much personal showmanship. These words provoked a strong reaction from Li Lianghui, who stood up emotionally and knocked down the coffee table in front of him on impulse. He walked up to the military leader and retorted bluntly, suggesting that if others wished, they could participate in the parachute jump and march together, and share the honor and responsibility. The remarks shook the audience, and the ensuing discussion came to an end, and the controversy subsided.
That year's exercise and parade walk were successfully completed under the leadership of Li Lianghui. His leadership is not only a reflection of personal courage and determination, but also of his charisma and loyalty to his team and country. The reason why Li Lianghui insisted on going out in person was not only for personal honor, but also to represent the glory of the entire airborne troops and the majesty of the Chinese army. His actions profoundly expressed a sense of responsibility that stemmed from a deep commitment to the army and the country.
Li Lianghui's prestige in the military has gradually risen, thanks to his outstanding professionalism and noble moral character. In 1983, he was promoted again for his outstanding performance, this time to become the commander of the Airborne Forces. After being promoted, Li Lianghui was more humble and low-key, without the slightest high-ranking officer, which made him extremely popular in the army.
Under the tide of the new era, Ningxia has ushered in new opportunities for development. Faced with this challenging task, the Central Committee decided to appoint Li Lianghui, who has extensive professional knowledge and outstanding military leadership, and transferred him to the post of deputy commander of the Ningxia Military Region.
Li Lianghui, who had been living in the south, was suddenly sent to the northwest with difficult conditions, which was undoubtedly a huge test for him. However, with his indomitable will and rapid adaptability, Li Lianghui quickly integrated into this new environment and devoted himself to the social and economic construction of Ningxia.
Li Lianghui has always played a leading role in his work, not only personally going down to the front line to publicize the importance of afforestation, but also personally leading the soldiers to plant trees in the yellow sandy area. His practical actions have greatly enhanced the enthusiasm of the officers and men for their work, and have enabled remarkable results in Ningxia's afforestation and construction work.
Because of his outstanding performance in Ningxia, the Party Central Committee was deeply gratified and decided to hand over to Li Lianghui the heavier responsibility of guarding the Xinjiang region on the front line of border defense. His new task is to maintain stability in this frontier region, which is another test of his ability.
After arriving in Xinjiang, Li Lianghui quickly analyzed the complicated public security situation in Xinjiang and formulated a series of effective measures to strengthen border security. His arrival has brought a new vitality to the Xinjiang region and ensured security and peace in the border areas. Li Lianghui's decisiveness and leadership have been reflected in every action in Xinjiang, and he has not only won the respect and love of the soldiers, but also ensured the stability and development of the border areas.
Through these measures, Li Lianghui not only consolidated the security of the frontier, but also made a significant contribution to the local social and economic development, and became a real frontier defender and promoter of the people's project. Just when Ningxia's development was on the right track, the central authorities urgently dispatched Li Lianghui to Xinjiang to deal with more thorny border defense and public security issues. Although he knew that the situation in Xinjiang was complicated, he did not hesitate to accept this mission, showing his perseverance and sense of responsibility.
In the spring of 1997, Li Lianghui was appointed commander of the Xinjiang Military Region. The political and social situation in Xinjiang is much more complex than in Ningxia, often involving all kinds of emergencies, which is a new and challenging stage for Li Lianghui. In this position of responsibility, he needs to stabilize the security of the border area and protect the lives of countless civilians.
On one occasion, Li Lianghui received urgent information from a patrolling helicopter group that a separatist force was secretly conducting live-fire training. After learning of the situation, Li Lianghui immediately made a decision and took decisive and resolute action -- without waiting for instructions from his superiors, he ordered his troops to quickly dispatch and strike at this armed gang with precision.
This swift and decisive command has effectively contained potential threats and greatly protected peace and security in the border areas. In hindsight, while this cut-and-play approach may have been controversial, it proved to dramatically reduce possible civilian casualties and larger conflicts.
In July 1998, Li Lianghui's military prowess and outstanding leadership were further recognized, and he was not only promoted to lieutenant general, but also elected as a member of the Central Committee. During his tenure as commander of the Xinjiang Military Region, he paid special attention to the lives and welfare of the soldiers stationed there, and gave instructions on many occasions to improve the quality of food and living conditions of the soldiers and to improve their military treatment, thus demonstrating his deep concern for the officers and men at the grassroots level.
Li Lianghui's management style and caring attitude were deeply loved by the officers and men, and he raised the morale and combat effectiveness of the army through practical actions, making the Xinjiang Military Region an impregnable defensive frontline. This combination of humanistic care and strict management has not only enhanced the overall efficiency of the military region, but also won the broad respect and support of the masses.
In 2000, a nationwide explosion of military materiel in Urumqi, Xinjiang, devastated local communities. At least 73 people were killed, more than 300 were injured, dozens of vehicles were destroyed and a large number of homes were damaged. After the incident, General Li Lianghui arrived at the scene of the incident as soon as possible, and when he saw this tragedy, he felt extremely sad and remorseful.
After an in-depth investigation, the accident was determined to be a tragedy caused by human negligence, with some non-compliant flammable and explosive materials being mistakenly loaded inside military vehicles, which, combined with the bumps in the road, led to catastrophic consequences. As the senior commander of the Xinjiang Military Region at that time, Li Lianghui did not try to shirk responsibility, but bravely assumed responsibility.
The veteran general's decision won the respect of all sectors of society. He not only assisted in the rescue work at the scene, but also insisted on his sense of responsibility and stuck to his post in the face of many angry family members and fierce public opinion, until he was dismissed. Even after being relieved of his duties, General Li Lianghui did not give up his service to the country, but continued to contribute to the country in different ways.
In 2001, despite the change of position, Li Lianghui was again entrusted with an important task and transferred to the Jinan Military Region as deputy commander. In this role, he continued to demonstrate outstanding leadership and deep loyalty to his country until his retirement. After retiring from the army, Li Lianghui continued to provide advice on national military and security affairs from time to time, showing that his patriotism has never changed.
Li Lianghui's career embodies Su Buqing's famous words: "A true patriot does not need to wait for any special opportunities, he can fully show his love for the motherland in his post." Although the accident cast a shadow over his career, it also showed his steadfastness and sacrifice as a soldier, and his story has inspired countless people to bravely face difficulties and stand up for their responsibilities and beliefs, even in the face of adversity.
