The 34th Sea Otter Classic in 2024 has come to an end. The American Sea Otter Bike Show is an outdoor cycling event held every spring in the Laguna Seca Recreation Resort, a resort in Monterey, California, USA, which originated as a cycling challenge in 1991 and has now developed into the world's largest outdoor cycling event with nearly 10,000 professional riders and athletes from all over the world.
At this year's Sea Otter Show, mountain biking technology once again broke through the boundaries, and many brands brought new mountain series products. The main attraction is the latest Fox 32 Step-Cast fork, the brand's new lightweight XC fork that features Manitou's signature fork axle design.
According to Fox, the new Fox 32 Step-Cast weighs just 1,287 grams, which is 156 grams lighter than the previous generation, and the newly designed fork axle fork is 40 percent stiffer than the previous generation. The fork also features Fox's new ultra-light Grip SL, which is designed for the rigors of mountain marathon racing.
Atherton has brought a more affordable version of the S-Range aluminium with a very outstanding design. The new S-Range was released in February, reducing the cost compared to the 3D-printed titanium lifting lugs and carbon tubes used on the Atherton A-Range bike.
Unlike most aluminum mountain bikes, the Atherton uses 7075 tubing. It is not easy to weld directly, but it has higher ultimate strength and fatigue resistance compared to traditional aluminum alloys used for bicycles. Prices start at £2,799 and £5,599 for the high-spec vehicle.
Box Components has updated its 9-speed drivetrain, with a new drivetrain centered around a one-piece steel flywheel. The Box One is a new, premium 9-speed drivetrain designed for the rigors of eMTB riding.
The new drivetrain is based on the Prime 9 drivetrain released in 2019 and is centered around a one-piece steel cassette and an updated rear derailleur. The flywheel is available in a single 11-50 T and is expected to sell for around $400 and has a claimed weight of 350 grams. The Box uses a proprietary chain with the same external width as the 9-speed chain. The kit will be available later this year and is expected to retail for $700.
If you like big pedals, then WolfTooth Ripsaw you'll love it. The RipSaw pedals were originally made from 6061-T6 alloy and were designed for off-roading.
The front end of the pedal is only 7 mm thick and the axle thickness is 12.5 mm. Each pedal is equipped with three sealed bearings and a total of 12 pins on the pedals for grip, which can also be replaced with 4.5 or 3.5 mm pins. The WolfTooth Ripsaw pedals come with a five-year warranty and are priced at 199 RMB/pair.
This is Praxis' forged Podium pedal, forged with relatively little on the boutique parts. At $155, the pedals are still competitive with other brands. Praxis' pedals are forged prior to machining, which results in a stronger pedal body compared to machining with a solid blank.
Despite the high cost of equipment input for upfront production, forging makes the production of pedals easier and cheaper, making them more market-competitive. The profile of the pedals has been slightly updated and is 14 mm thick at its widest point. Like the Wolf Tooth's pedals, the Praxis Podium pedals also come with three sealed Enduro bearings and custom Igus bushings.
Maxxis introduces the fastest XC race tire, the Aspen ST, which is designed for fast driving in extremely dry conditions. Maxxis Aspen ST XC tires have been racing by professionals for years and are now finally available for the public to buy.
With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, we're seeing more new technologies come to the fore, including the predecessor of Vittoria's new Peyote tyre.
Michelin's new DH tyres are inspired by the classic Comp 16. The new DH16 tires are the brand's downhill tires designed for dry conditions, and this tire replaces the DH34. According to Michelin, the new tires are about 150 grams lighter than the previous generation and have 18% more rolling resistance.
