Throughout March and April, the majority of the DPP members were very aggrieved, even though Lai Ching-te would soon take office! This was because the KMT was in the limelight and appeared on hot searches from time to time, attracting the attention of Taiwan's democracy. It was at this time that a crackdown on the Kuomintang was quietly unfolding under the table.
Let's first talk about the reasons for the DPP's depression.
Recently, Taiwan's Kuomintang has indeed been quite lively internally. Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of the Kuomintang, made an unprecedented success in his visit to the mainland, and he also met and held talks with important figures on the mainland.
The Kuomintang bigwigs who have already confirmed their visits to the mainland include Fu Kunqing, chief of the Kuomintang caucus in the "legislature," Hao Longbin, former vice chairman of the Kuomintang, Li Qianlong, secretary general of the Kuomintang, and Han Kuo-yu, president of the Kuomintang Legislative Yuan. According to Taiwan media, Kuomintang Chairman Zhu Lilun also plans to visit the mainland, but he seems to have put forward certain conditions to the mainland, and it is still uncertain whether he will be able to make a successful visit to the mainland.
The DPP's visit to the mainland one after another by these Kuomintang members has made the DPP very unhappy, and in particular, some of Ma Ying-jeou's remarks before and after his visit to the mainland have deeply stimulated the DPP's "sensitive nerves." During his visit to the mainland, Ma Ying-jeou openly expressed his adherence to the "consensus of '92" on many occasions, and when he returned to Taiwan, he shouted to Lai Ching-te in an interview with the media, asking him to give up his illusions, abandon the Taiwan independence line, and carry out normal communication and exchanges with the mainland.
In addition to Ma Ying-jeou, the recent performance of former KMT Chairman Hong Xiuzhu has also angered the DPP. She arrived in Shenzhen by plane on April 20, and when she visited a science and technology company in the mainland, she bluntly said, "I have chest tightness, but this is a heart disease, and when the two sides of the strait are reunified, the heart disease will be cured." Hong Xiuzhu's statement is incompatible with the DPP's position.
What's more, Hong Xiuzhu also ridiculed the DPP. In a speech at Shenzhen University, Hong Xiuzhu said that Taiwanese are Chinese, and if anyone does not recognize being Chinese, blood will be drawn for DNA testing. Hong Xiuzhu is likely to be mocking Tsai Ing-wen and Lai Qingde, both of whom are from Fujian, and they dare not admit that they are Chinese!
Watching the Kuomintang run to the mainland one by one and get close to the mainland one by one, the DPP was very aggrieved, and at this time, the suppression of the Kuomintang began.
Hou Youyi, a confidant of Kuomintang Chairman Zhu Lilun, has recently been targeted by Taiwan's supervisory organs, who have been asked to go to the supervisory organs for investigation. What made Hou Youyi angry was that the case under investigation happened 35 years ago, when Hou Youyi was just an ordinary grassroots civil servant, usually doing some errands and chores, mostly to serve his superiors. Now that the DPP has unearthed the case of 35 years ago to investigate Hou Youyi, it is obvious that someone deliberately wants to rectify him.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) does not think so, saying that during Hou Youyi's election for mayor of New Taipei and Taiwan's 2024 election, the KMT has also used similar methods, using cases from the past years to toss the DPP. The DPP is only doing this to "learn from it."
In addition to Hou Youyi, the DPP is also eyeing the unification faction. In the early years, retired rear admiral Sun Haitao of the Taiwan Navy and writer Zhu Kangming both went to the mainland to participate in some social activities, some of which were themed "peaceful reunification of the two sides of the strait." After collecting information, the DPP claimed that they had violated the law. The two were handed over to the Kaohsiung Branch of the Supreme People's Procuratorate for prosecution after several tosses, and the verdict was recently announced, with fines of 600,000 yuan and 500,000 yuan. The two were also put on a "blacklist" by the Taiwan authorities and were not allowed to leave the country or go to sea, including restrictions on residence.
Of course, what the DPP wants most is Ma Ying-jeou and his party. Some Taiwan media broke the news that Ma Ying-jeou called for the revision of the "anti-infiltration law" in the days after his return to Taiwan. After Lai Qingde learned about it, he resolutely opposed the revision of the "Anti-Infiltration Law" at the relevant meeting.
The "anti-infiltration law" is part of the "evil law" forcibly passed by the DPP in 2019 by taking advantage of the "majority" of the Legislative Yuan.
In order to avoid being suppressed by the DPP, some Kuomintang bigwigs deliberately kept a low profile and did not have any contacts or exchanges with the mainland. Recently, however, there have been louder calls for revising the "anti-infiltration law," and there will be another battle between the DPP and the KMT.
The reason why the DPP is strong is that in addition to its political advantages, it is also backed by the United States. The U.S. House of Representatives passed an aid bill that includes $1.9 billion in aid to Taiwan to help Taiwan improve its military combat effectiveness. In addition, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently visited the mainland, and sources said that Blinken may warn Beijing in person that the mainland will not allow harassment during Lai's inauguration.
