Zhang Jiqun is a 54-year-old water distributor of the operation and maintenance team of the Chepaizi Irrigation District Station of the Seventh Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. Since 2001, he has worked at the water distribution point of the second branch canal of the main trunk canal of the Liu shunting of the Chepaizi Irrigation District, and he has bravely rescued the people who fell into the water eight times, and his deeds of righteousness and courage have been passed down as good stories in the local area.

Zhang Jiqun's work as a water distributor has to start with his father. In 1958, Zhang Jiqun's father came to the XPCC and became a water conservancy worker working in a remote water distribution point, and has been conscientious and dedicated for 40 years. After Zhang Jiqun grew up at the water distribution point, he took over the baton from his father and became a water distributor.
Zhang Jiqun's section of the Liu shunting canal is 2.7 kilometers long, nearly 10 meters wide at its widest point, and the maximum water transfer is 18 cubic meters per second. Due to the perennial water impact, the surface of the cement slab of the channel is covered with moss, and once someone accidentally falls into the water, even if they can swim, it is difficult to save themselves. Therefore, when Zhang Jiqun patrols the canal, he always carries a rope with him just in case. It was this rope that saved the lives of 8 people one after another.

"I remember the first time I rescued people, when I rescued two teenage children in a canal. Although the situation was not dangerous at the time, life was too precious to be careless, and since then I have been paying special attention to pedestrians who come to the canal. Zhang Jiqun said.
One day in August 2005, Zhang Jiqun was patrolling the canal as usual when he suddenly heard a cry for help in the distance. He immediately rushed over and saw a man running by the channel and shouting for help, and in the channel, a man was struggling in the water, drifting with the water to the downstream gate.

The channel is trapezoidal and the water depth is close to 3 meters, making rescue extremely difficult. Zhang Jiqun didn't think much about it, and immediately jumped into the water, and the drowning man grabbed his arm tightly out of instinct and did not let go, and the two of them were pushed to the gate by the current together. Seeing that he was about to be washed to the gate, Zhang Jiqun seized the opportunity to desperately push the drowning man to the shore, but he was exhausted and was swept into the current. After a short rest, Zhang Jiqun hurriedly took the two back to the water distribution point, boiled hot water for them to drink, and brought clean clothes.
Since then, Zhang Jiqun has increased the number of canal patrols and always has a "lifeline" on hand so that rescue can be carried out quickly in case of emergency.
"The section of the willow shunting canal is located next to the highway, although there are warning signs on the side of the canal, but every summer there will be many people to walk by the canal, enjoy the coolness, and the situation of falling into the water occurs from time to time. Zhang Jiqun said that every time he patrolled the canal, he had to dissuade people from staying away from the canal.

After more than 20 years of work, Zhang Jiqun has rescued many people who have fallen into the water, and he is well aware of the dangers he will face, but he has never hesitated. He said: "As long as the water is released, 24-hour duty is the norm of our work, and only in this way can we find the workers in distress in time." ”
