U.S. Secretary of Commerce: Huawei's chips are not that advanced

In an interview with CBS, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said that the chips in Huawei Technologies Co.'s latest phones aren't that strong. China is still lagging behind in cutting-edge chip technology.

In an interview with CBS News 60 Minutes, Raimondo downplayed the company's claims of breakthrough and said the technology gap showed the Biden administration's success in imposing export controls on China.

When Raimondo visited China in August, Shenzhen-based Huawei unveiled a smartphone with an advanced domestic chip that was generations ahead of what the United States hoped would stop China from advancing.

雷蒙多在周日播出的采访中说:“这比我们在美国的情况落后了好几年。 ” “我们拥有世界上最先进的半导体。 中国没有。 我们在创新方面已经超越了中国。 ”(“It’s years behind what we have in the United States,” Raimondo said in the interview broadcast Sunday. “We have the most sophisticated semiconductors in the world. China doesnt. We’ve out-innovated China.” )雷蒙多发誓要采取“尽可能强有力”的行动来保护美国国家安全。

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the United States and its allies have tightened semiconductor export controls to Moscow, and the global chip race has intensified. Raimondo said the restrictions were in effect, citing reports that the Russians were taking semiconductors out of refrigerators, dishwashers for military equipment.

"Our export controls really hurt their ability to fight wars and make wars more difficult," Raimondo said. ”

Raimondo's department, once known for a secretary who struggled to stay awake at work, now plays a key role in the Biden administration's China strategy, including efforts to prevent state-of-the-art technology from falling into Chinese hands.

Raimondo is pressuring the Netherlands, as well as South Korea and Germany, to further restrict China's access to foreign technology after letting the Netherlands and Japan impose some restrictions on restrictions last year and then tighten U.S. rules in the fall.

Her department is also responsible for disbursing more than $100 billion worth of grants and loans to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing while rallying allies to curb China's own chipmaking and artificial intelligence ambitions.

In recent weeks, Raimondo has unveiled the multibillion-dollar awards awarded to Intel Corporation, TSMC and Samsung Electronics under the CHIPS & Science Act of 2022, and another award for Micron Technology will be announced this week. Since President Joe Biden took office, federal funding has spurred more than $200 billion in private semiconductor investment, with more than 600 companies expressing interest, nearly 85% allocated.
