Health literacy of Hangzhou residents
Recently, the results of the 2023 Hangzhou residents' health literacy monitoring were announced, and the health literacy level of Hangzhou residents reached 45.41%, a record high.
PART 01
What is health literacy?
Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to obtain, understand, and process basic health information and services, and to use these information and services to make correct judgments and decisions, and to maintain and promote health.
Health literacy is internationally recognized as an important indicator to reflect the effectiveness of health education and health promotion actions, which can be divided into three aspects:
It covers six dimensions of health knowledge, including scientific health concept, safety and first aid, health information, chronic disease prevention and control, basic medical care, and infectious disease prevention and control.
PART 02
The results of the 2023 monitoring are announced
The residents' health literacy monitoring covered 13 districts (counties and cities) in the city, with a total of 8,320 households surveyed, and the survey subjects were permanent residents aged 15-69, and 8,110 valid questionnaires were completed.
Compared to the previous year, the monitoring results in 2023 show the following trends:
First, the uneven distribution of health literacy levels among the population still exists.

- 35-44 years old, 59.60%;
- Over 45 years old, the level of health literacy gradually decreases with the increase of age group, and only 9.68% in the 65-69 age group.
Distribution of education level
The level of health literacy increased with the increase of education level.
- The illiterate/underliterate group had the lowest level of health literacy, at 2.84%;
- The junior college/bachelor's/master's degree group had the highest education level, which was 67.17%.

the scientific concept of health was 68.99%, an increase of 3.85 percentage points compared with 2022;

Analysis of monitoring results
On the one hand, the health literacy level of the rural population is lower than that of other groups of people who are over 45 years old, have a low education level, and are the key groups in the future health literacy promotion action.
On the other hand, there is a large gap in the literacy level of the six types of health problems, and health education on the knowledge and skills of chronic diseases and infectious diseases should be vigorously strengthened.
PART 03
Steadily improve the level of health literacy
In the next step, Hangzhou will continue to promote the popularization of health knowledge, firmly establish the concept of "everyone is the first responsible person for their own health", further change the concept of public health, and steadily improve the level of health literacy.
01
Strengthen overall planning and expand new paths for health communication. We will continue to optimize the mechanism of two libraries and one library, and build a shared resource library with the city level as the overall plan and the district and county as the matrix, covering 19 resource classifications, and open it to the public.
02
Strengthen capacity and integrate new health promotion forces. Promote the construction of health science popularization bases with regional, industrial, and disciplinary characteristics, and make full use of public cultural and sports facilities to carry out science popularization publicity and science popularization activities.
03
Pay attention to people's livelihood and polish a good brand of health science popularization. We will further expand the gold medal health lecturer group, carry out in-depth gold medal health lecturer tours, continue to organize and implement health literacy into rural cultural halls, citizen health knowledge competitions, healthy family awards, health talent selection and other people's health brands, and continue to polish the health science popularization brands with good results and good reputation, such as "Hangzhou Doctor Science Popularization" and "Qiantang Famous Doctor Hui".
