Li Siqiang was innocently imprisoned for 12 years, leaving only a big question mark behind him, and the pain he endured in prison is unimaginable.
Although his brother Li Kuixing has repeatedly appealed for many years, the court and relevant departments have always ignored him, and even strangely found him guilty three times. This case tells us heartwarmingly that even if all people are created equal before the law, it is difficult for us to get rid of the subjective gaze and malice of some people.
In 2007, while looking for work in Anhui Province, Li Siqiang disappeared in Nanjing, south of the Yangtze River. Somehow, an ID card of the fugitive Liu Xiwen appeared on him. The Nanjing police immediately arrested him, ignoring the fact that he was mentally disabled, and charged him for his involvement in the robbery.

Without conducting an in-depth investigation, the court found Liu Xiwen guilty and sentenced him to 12 years and six months in prison. Many years later, the real murderer Liu Xiwen was arrested, but the court still refused to admit its mistake. It was not until shortly after he was released from prison in 2016 that Li Siqiang died of illness caused by long-term detention at the age of 37.
Li Kuixing's brother has not hesitated to redress his brother's unjust case for many years. He recalled how his younger brother had been frail and sickly since he was a child, and how he was still obsessed with learning under the pressure of his livelihood, and he couldn't bear to see him suffer one day. He searched for every clue, collected every possible evidence, and hoped to awaken the conscience of the officials. However, the court found the conclusion on three occasions, as if evading responsibility. This momentum to do something wrong and not dare to admit it is incredible.
According to a relative or friend who has been practicing law for many years, the most bizarre thing about this case is that the court has never made a serious judgment on the evidence and facts, but has been blinded by a subjective inclination or profit drive. It is undoubtedly absurd in law to impose such a heavy sentence on a mentally disabled person. But the judges seem to have a hard time admitting their mistakes and choosing to evade responsibility. This exposes certain problems in the current court system, which cannot be delineated solely by individual responsibility. The improvement of the mechanism of supervision and checks and balances, as well as the change of the ideology of officials, are fundamental issues.
At the same time, we also have to admit that in real life, there are still some people who tend to abuse power for personal gain and judge with selfish intentions. They tend to be too self-righteous, define truth and justice on their own with their limited knowledge, and ignore fair judgments of facts. If such a person is in a high-ranking position, the impact is particularly bad. Some people in the public opinion also pointed out that some details of the case seem to suggest that there may be deeper problems that deserve further detailed investigation.
There is no doubt that Li Siqiang's death symbolizes a warning of the times: we need to look at each case with a tolerant and rational attitude, and empathize with the true meaning of justice.
