Recently, severe convective weather has been active in Jiangxi Province. On April 19, the reporter learned from the Jiangxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau that since April, four lightning disasters have occurred in Jiangxi, resulting in 3 deaths and 3 injuries.
According to incomplete statistics, since late March, Jiangxi has received a total of 21 lightning accidents, 8 in rural areas and 13 in urban areas, causing damage to power facilities, electrical and electronic equipment, and buildings. Four of the lightning accidents, resulting in three deaths and three injuries, occurred in April.
Jiangxi is a national lightning area with many thunderstorms and strong minefields. Affected by the El Niño event, from late March to April 17 this year, the climate in Jiangxi was unusually warm, with the average temperature of the province being 19.5 °C, 3.5 °C higher than that of the same period in normal years, ranking the first highest in the same period in history, and the average precipitation of the province was 289.9 mm, 5.2 percent more. Under this climatic background, severe convective weather such as thunder and lightning, hailstorms, and short-term heavy precipitation in Jiangxi Province from late March to mid-April this year occurred frequently and repeatedly. At present, there have been five regional severe convective weather processes in Jiangxi Province, and the maximum wind speed at many stations has exceeded the historical extreme.
