01 Why catch up on inactivated polio vaccine?
Poliomyelitis is an acute intestinal infectious disease caused by poliovirus, commonly known as "polio", which has been widespread in mainland history. There are three serotypes of poliovirus that are not cross-immune to each other. At present, there are two types of polio vaccine used in mainland China according to their nature: one is inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) (intramuscular), which contains three serotypes I., II and III., and the other is live attenuated polio vaccine (bOPV) (oral), which contains two serotypes I and III.
On 1 May 2016, the mainland made its first adjustment to the polio vaccine immunization schedule, with a nationwide immunization schedule of one dose of inactivated polio vaccine and three doses of live attenuated polio vaccine.
On 31 December 2019, the mainland made a second adjustment to the polio vaccine immunization schedule, with a nationwide immunization schedule of 2 doses of inactivated polio vaccine and 2 doses of live attenuated polio vaccine.
Studies have shown that with only one dose of IPV, the body's antibody conversion rate against poliovirus type II is low. In recent years, polio outbreaks have occurred in many countries around the world, especially those caused by type II vaccine-derived poliovirus. Until the global goal of polio eradication is finally achieved, the continent will continue to be at risk of poliovirus importation and transmission as long as there is poliovirus transmission and epidemic in other countries and regions.
In order to strengthen the immune protection effect against poliovirus type II, on January 30 this year, the mainland decided to carry out the second dose of inactivated polio vaccine catch-up vaccination for the relevant population, and increase the number of inactivated polio vaccination doses by one dose for school-age children who have only received one dose of IPV, aiming to increase the antibody conversion rate of the relevant population against poliovirus type II and make the protection more comprehensive.
02 Which children need catch-up?
At present, in accordance with the unified deployment of the state and Hubei Province, our city has started the revaccination of inactivated polio vaccine. Children born between March 1, 2016 and September 30, 2019, regardless of whether they are locally documented children, and who have a history of less than 2 doses of inactivated polio vaccine (including combination vaccines containing inactivated polio vaccine components), as long as they meet the vaccination conditions and have no contraindications to inactivated polio vaccination, they need to make up 2 doses of inactivated polio vaccine. The catch-up vaccination will last until June 30, 2024, and the vaccination fee will be free of charge.

14 | Catch-up polio vaccine (for unvaccinated people). | Catch-up vaccination against inactivated polio | Catch-up with live attenuated bivalent polio vaccine | Catch-up with live attenuated bivalent polio vaccine | — |
The interval between the catch-up dose of inactivated polio vaccine and live attenuated bivalent polio vaccine and the previous dose of polio vaccine should not be less than 28 days. If your child needs to be revaccinated, you can take the initiative to consult the vaccination clinic in the jurisdiction, and take your child to the vaccination clinic to complete the revaccination in time according to the notice of the community and the school.
03 Where to re-inocinate my child?
There are about 71,800 eligible children in our city. From March 21 to 31, the first batch of about 27,000 doses of inactivated polio vaccine has been distributed to all districts and child vaccination units in our city. In the coming months, catch-up vaccinations will be distributed to districts in batches to meet the needs of children.
At present, there are 176 children's vaccination clinics in Xiangyang, distributed in various counties and cities, so that parents of children can bring their children to the nearest vaccination clinic to complete the catch-up vaccination.
