Chu denied committing the crime after being arrested, and deliberately did not disclose his nationality and identity to the Thai police, refused to cooperate with the police's passport inspection, and lied that his passport was lost, claiming that he had been suffering from mental illness for five years, and entered Thailand on April 10 and traveled to Chiang Mai, staying in a luxury hotel in the center of Chiang Mai. Suspicious of his confession, the police expanded their investigation and eventually arrested three of Chu's accomplices at the hotel.
It is reported that the police found a gold necklace and a gold-framed Buddha statue worth 50,000 baht in the hotel room where the four people were staying, and their certificates were confiscated. The police initially charged the four people with crimes such as theft and robbery, and they face up to five years in prison and a fine of not more than 10,000 baht.
