Recently, the Middle East problem has become more serious again, so much so that the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has attracted much attention in the previous two years, has become a little unnoticed.
For example, Iran said Israel bombed its embassy in the Syrian capital, and then sent armed forces to retaliate against Israel a dozen days later.
However, compared to the contradictions between Israel and other countries, the contradictions between Israel and Palestine are clearly the core of the problem.
Since the resumption of the fighting in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the United Nations has held a meeting almost every day on matters between Palestine and Israel.
But at the same time, many people say that the reason why Palestine is so passive in this conflict is not only that Israel has the backing of the United States.
At the same time, it is also because Palestine has not been a full member of the United Nations until now, so there will be many inconveniences in the international field.
[One vote veto]
Therefore, in order to resolve this issue, on 18 April, in addition to the usual meeting on the Middle East, the United Nations Security Council held a special meeting to discuss the issue of entry into the Security Council with Palestine.
As a country, although Palestine is in a state of territorial incompleteness and the country has been in the midst of war for a long time, according to the UN Charter, Palestine is also eligible to become a full member of the United Nations.
Unlike China's restoration of its seat in the United Nations, what New China wants to return to the United Nations is the vote of the United Nations General Assembly, that is, all UN member states.
This is because we were actually the founding members of the United Nations at the beginning, but later because of the change of power in the country, the seats in the United Nations were not replaced.
We also know that the reason for this situation is that the United States at that time used its influence to obstruct China's return to the United Nations behind the scenes.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the United States did not do much to obstruct it, so Russia took over all the rights and interests of the Soviet Union in the United Nations very smoothly.
But Palestine is different, and although the country has in fact existed for decades, they were not members of the United Nations in the first place.
According to the Charter of the United Nations, the entry of non-members into the United Nations requires the recommendation of the Security Council, that is, if the Security Council does not agree, or if one of the P5 disagrees, Palestine cannot enter the United Nations and become a full member.
The result is clear: the United States has used its veto power, even though Palestine fully meets the criteria for full membership in the United Nations.
In the end, 12 countries voted in favor of the resolution, two countries chose to abstain, and only one country opposed it, and that was the United States.
[Reactions from all parties]
In accordance with the practice of the United Nations, regardless of whether a resolution is adopted or not, there will be a round of speeches, in which the reaction of countries to the outcome can be clearly seen.
Israel's permanent representative to the United Nations, Erdan, was obviously very pleased with the result, and in addition to the procedural thanks to the rotating presidency of the Security Council, the first thing he said was to thank the United States.
Later, Erdan shamelessly expressed his gratitude to Biden for being able to stand with justice and truth in this hypocritical political environment.
Later, he also said that Palestine was not enough to meet the conditions for becoming a member of the United Nations, because the Palestinian government did not have the ability to govern its own territory, and it was clear that he must have said this with a clear conscience, because he must have known that Palestine could not govern its own territory well, because it lived next to a country called Israel.
Although many people feel that the Israeli representative's speech is simply unbearable, the United States' announcement is simply a bit of a beast.
As soon as he came up, the representative of the United States said that he had been working hard to achieve peace and that he also supported the establishment of a Palestinian state within a peaceful framework.
These words seem to be very high-sounding, but they hide a knife, because since he said that he supports the establishment of a Palestinian state, it means that they do not recognize the current Palestinian government at all.
They also revisited the Hamas attack on the Palestinian music festival on October 7 last year, which is also to say that the current Palestine is not peaceful and therefore cannot enter the United Nations.
In contrast, the legal eyes of China and Russia are really looking at the problem from an objective perspective, and at the same time speaking for Palestine.
The Russian representative said very directly, or Russia has always been like this, and he said bluntly that this is the fifth time since 7 October last year that the United States has used its veto power on the Middle East issue.
He also said that for the United States, the Palestinians do not deserve a state of their own, even though most countries in the world are in favor of Palestine becoming a full member.
At this point, the United States has actually fallen into a state of complete isolation, which can be seen from the results of the vote alone.
The representative of China directly stated that April 18 was a sad day, and that for the Palestinian people, becoming a full member of the United Nations may have been their dream for decades.
Today, however, this dream has been ruthlessly shattered by the veto power of the United States, so we are very disappointed by the behavior of the United States.
In fact, on April 17, the day before Palestine entered the United Nations vote, many people had already speculated that the United States would continue to use its veto power in this matter.
However, there are still people who do not believe in evil, and asked Greenfield, the US permanent representative to the United Nations, the day before the vote began, she said that although Biden supports the two-state solution, it does not mean that the resolution can be passed.
【Two-State Solution】
As we all know, neither the Palestinians nor Israel is a country that has existed since ancient times, and neither of them has a history of more than 100 years.
After the end of World War I, with the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, Palestine was entrusted to the British, and although it was not a British colony, it was under British jurisdiction.
After that, because of the anti-Jewish sentiment in many European countries, a large number of Jews left Europe, and some of them chose to go to the United States.
Others returned to the place where they had stayed thousands of years ago, namely Palestine, which they claimed to have been given to them by God, but everyone knew that the Jews would not have come to this barren land if they had not been driven out by the Europeans.
But in desperation, a large number of Jews came to the area and clashed with the native Palestinians who had lived here for thousands of years.
With the arrival of the Jews, the question of Palestine began to complicate and Britain handed it over to the United Nations.
Eventually, the United Nations adopted a two-state solution to the Palestinian problem, in which two states were established, one for the Jews and the other for the native Pakistanis.
But then we also learned that after the two-state solution, Israel was founded at the speed of light, and after the withdrawal of British soldiers from Palestine, the Middle East war broke out.
The Palestinian people, on the other hand, could only be used as a backdrop in the previous wars in the Middle East, and although the country was established with great difficulty, it has not yet been widely recognized by the international community.
