The "dynamic range" of this camera is astonishing! Now is a good time to buy

author:Old Tang is in the travel map

When I go out to shoot in the wind, photographers like to shoot sunrise and sunset, which is the wonderful blues moment of sunrise and sunset. Such as the works of foreign photographers such as Figures 1 to 3.

The common features of these works are "backlighting, large light ratio, small aperture", and the photos show very good dynamic range and detail. As you can see from the photos, they were also taken at sunset or sunrise.

The above work involves an indicator to measure the "quality of the camera": "dynamic range". Put simply, dynamic range is the usable difference between the darkest and brightest parts of an image. The higher the number, the better the dynamic range of the camera, and the better the camera is capable of shooting in the working environment.

The available variance values are the extent to which your photo is no longer usable when you are in post-processing. For example: color fractures, severe tears, smearing, large areas of color, etc。。。。。。

Some time ago, I tried the dynamic range of the Canon R5, and the performance of this bucket machine was amazing! In the case of shooting sunrise and sunset, it seems that HDR can be used without it.

Figure 5, the shooting time was around 4:30 p.m., and the shooting equipment was a Canon R5 with a lens of 15-35f2.8 (see red line). The sun does not set completely, and the light ratio is greater than in the three pictures above. You can see that the parameters are: ISO100, aperture F11, shutter 1/5000.

Adjusting the parameter "Brightness" at ACR is 0.

Figure 6, Lowering the highlight to the left to -100, you can see the overexposed halo near the sun disappear, and you can see a very clear edge of the sun. Then the shadows were turned on to +100, and the detail on the ground was almost fully displayed, and the transitions were very good.

After a hard run of extreme maneuvers (with the highlights and shadows ± wide open), the R5's dynamic range is still unsatisfying: it feels like there's still plenty to spare. There is still about ±50 or so margin to operate. You know, this kind of shooting environment is almost to the limit.

Figure 7, further increasing the exposure in the ACR, seeing that there is still no overexposure near the sun, and then adding a little contrast, adding a little white and black, and finally getting a "transition and texture" that is quite good. Judging from such a simple test, the Canon R5 can safely shoot any complex environment. You don't have to worry about it "dropping the chain" at a critical time.

Pictures 8-9 show that the results are still good by shooting and post-processing other shooting environments and subjects.

Although this test is not very rigorous, it provides an important reference. There are two points to note:

1. It is not advisable to shoot with any camera facing the sun for a long time in the case of such a large light ratio. The best time to shoot sunset and sunrise is when the sun has just set a third of the way.

2. In the case of shooting complex environments such as sunrise and sunset, or night, generally slightly worse cameras, you can use a lower ISO and a tripod to provide "dynamic range" for post-processing.

In addition, it is said that the Canon R5II and R1 flagships are ready to be launched in May, and now the price of the R5 has also dropped to around 20,000. For the average photographer, it is a good time to buy, and it is also the most "cost-effective" time.
