Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Zhejiang University continued to rank among the top three in the main list (i.e., the comprehensive university ranking). Peking Union Medical College ranked first among medical universities, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics ranked first in the ranking of finance and economics universities, Beijing University of Foreign Chinese Language ranked first in the ranking of language universities, China University of Political Science and Law ranked first in the ranking of political and legal universities, Minzu University of China occupied the first place in the ranking of ethnic universities, Shanghai Sports University led the ranking of sports universities, and Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) won the championship in the ranking of Chinese cooperative universities.
2024 Ranking of Chinese Universities (Top 100)
Yunnan universities performed well in this ranking, with a total of 17 universities entering the main list, of which 10 universities are in the top 500 of the main list.
In this ranking, Yunnan University, a "double first-class" university, has climbed further in the ranking, ranking 70th in the country, an improvement of 10 places compared with 2023, and continues to lead the province's universities. Other universities in the top 500 are Kunming University of Science and Technology (115th), Yunnan Normal University (200th), Yunnan Agricultural University (295th), Dali University (309th), Southwest Forestry University (314th), Qujing Normal University (402nd), Kunming University (434th), Yuxi Normal University (456th) and Honghe University (493rd).
In the ranking of single-subject universities, the performance of Yunnan universities is also remarkable. Yunnan University for Nationalities ranks 5th in the country in the ranking of ethnic universities, an improvement of 4 places compared with 2023. Kunming Medical University ranks 36th in the country in the ranking of pharmaceutical universities, an improvement of 2 places from 2023. Yunnan University of Finance and Economics ranks 29th in the country in the ranking of finance and economics universities, an improvement of 4 places from 2023.
In the main list of private universities, Lijiang Institute of Culture and Tourism ranks 75th in the country, ahead of other private universities in the province.
The rapid progress of Yunnan's colleges and universities is closely related to Yunnan's strengthening of higher education. The "14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Education in Yunnan Province" released in January 2022 pointed out that with the goal of building a high-quality higher education system, the scale development and resource allocation of higher education should be scientifically planned, the layout and structure should be optimized, the "121 Project" should be implemented, the construction of "double first-class" and "double high" should be accelerated, the talent training model should be innovated, the advantageous disciplines and majors should be strengthened, the characteristic education brand should be created, the cooperation and assistance mechanism of the province, the province and the school should be innovated, the resources of the Southwest Associated University should be fully explored, and the high-quality development of higher education should be comprehensively promoted.
In May 2023, the General Office of the Yunnan Provincial Party Committee of the Communist Party of China and the General Office of the People's Government of Yunnan Province issued the "Three-Year Action Plan for the High-quality Development of Education in Yunnan Province (2023-2025)", which clearly proposes to accelerate the construction of "double first-class" in Yunnan University and the creation of "double first-class" in Kunming University of Science and Technology, implement the action of "increasing A and removing D" in undergraduate majors, build a number of world-class (Class A) undergraduate majors, and gradually eliminate (Class D) majors below the national average. By 2025, the construction of "double first-class" will achieve new results, the overall level of undergraduate education in the province will reach the national average level, and the first phase of the campus of Southwest United Graduate School will be completed and put into use, achieving a breakthrough in Sino-foreign cooperatively-run schools.
