Recently, the Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment announced the results of the provincial surface water environmental quality ranking in February 2024, and Xichuan County has achieved two proud results in the county (city, district) water quality ranking: ranking first in Nanyang City and second in the province in February, and ranking sixth in the province from January to February.
Xichuan County is the core water source area and the head of the canal of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and is responsible for the sustainable delivery of clean water to the north. "We have always kept in mind the earnest entrustment of 'guarding this reservoir clear water', regarded water quality protection as the overriding primary political task, loyally and responsibly, built a strong line of defense, and ensured that a clear water flow northward. Zhou Dapeng, member of the Standing Committee of the Nanyang Municipal Party Committee and secretary of the Xichuan County Party Committee, said.
According to statistics, in recent years, Xichuan County has shut down more than 380 enterprises that do not meet the environmental impact assessment standards, banned water catering boats and 51,700 boxes of fish cages in the reservoir area, shut down 613 farms in the forbidden area, built 14 sewage treatment plants, 12 garbage disposal sites, more than 300 sets of pollution control facilities, demolished 168,000 square meters of illegal construction in the reservoir area, restored 5.3 million cubic meters of effective storage capacity, and restored more than 50 million acres of ecological wetlands.
Moving forward with green, we must plant green to control pollution. Xichuan County, which integrates mountainous areas and reservoir areas, is a typical karst landform, with a rocky desertification area of 1.25 million mu, and 550,000 mu of severe rocky desertification, which affects the water quality safety of the reservoir.
"We carry forward the spirit of ants gnawing bones, make every effort to march to rocky desertification, and adopt shoulder-carrying vehicles, multi-level irrigation, guest soil afforestation and other methods, with an average annual afforestation of more than 70,000 mu, and a total of more than 600,000 mu of afforestation in the past 9 years. Wang Xingyong, the magistrate of Xichuan County, introduced that in recent years, the county has focused on the barren mountains around the reservoir, the dissipation of the reservoir area, the four sides of the village, and the important tourism channels, and implemented four major projects such as barren mountain greening, corridor quality improvement, forest urban and rural areas, and ecological restoration, so as to accelerate the greening of the whole area and realize the "three increases" of forest area, forest accumulation, and comprehensive forest benefits.
At present, Xichuan County has invested a total of 2 billion yuan to control 382,000 acres of rocky desertification, and built 12 rocky desertification afforestation sites of more than 5,000 acres in the barren mountains around the reservoir, with a survival rate of more than 90%, and the qualified area of new afforestation has ranked in the forefront of the province and county for 16 consecutive years, and has successfully created a national ecological civilization construction demonstration zone.
At the same time, Xichuan County also adopts smart protection to build a line of defense for information supervision. In recent years, Xichuan County has built 12 automatic water quality monitoring stations above the municipal level in the estuaries of major rivers and reservoir areas to achieve all-weather automatic monitoring of water quality. "Four networks and two platforms" have been built in the whole territory, and 598 video probes have been installed in key parts of the rivers and around the reservoir for 24-hour all-round real-time monitoring. In the reservoir area and the 2,616 square kilometers catchment area, the high-score Beidou system is used to establish an electronic fence to ensure water quality safety.
Today's Xichuan, the sky is blue and the ground is green, the birds are singing and the fish are playing, the water is clear and the people are rich, there are beautiful scenery everywhere, the eyes are full of ecology, the water quality of Danjiangkou Reservoir is stable and maintained above the standard of class II., and the water quality compliance rate of the surface water responsibility section is 100%.
