The image quality is good, the size is small, and the price is affordable, is there such a lens?
唯卓仕AF 56mm F1.7:我全都要!
Design
This lens is a half-frame lens with an equivalent focal length of nearly 85mm, which is suitable for shooting portraits, close-ups, street sweeping, and other subjects. Best of all, it only costs $899!
The design of the mirror body is simple, the surface is slightly matte, and the size is also very small, and the weight is lighter than most mobile phones on the market today (187g for the Z-mount version, 171g for the X-mount version).
The filter port is 52mm, the size is not large, and you can also save some costs when choosing a filter. (After all, a small-sized filter will still be cheaper than a large-sized one)
Although the price is already affordable, it also comes with a metal mount and a USB-C port for firmware upgrades.
In addition to the Nikon Z-mount, this lens is currently available in a Fujifilm X-mount version, and its compact size and Fujifilm body also work harmoniously.
Theory test
The optical design of the two mount versions of this lens is the same, and there is no significant difference in performance, we mainly used the Fujifilm X-T5 for theoretical testing, except for the resolution (the number of pixels in the body sensor is different), other results can be used as a reference for the performance of the Z-mount version.
001 resolution test
The resolution test was performed using the 40-million-pixel Fujifilm X-T5, and the ISO was the native minimum ISO of 125.
At maximum aperture, the center image quality is very good, and the 36 lines of the target are relatively clear. F2.8-F8, the contrast of the picture is higher, and the resolution performance is solid enough. The quality of the corners is also more in line with the MTF image, and the loss of resolution in the corners at each aperture is not noticeable compared to the center quality.
F11-F16, due to diffraction, the center and corners of the image quality have a significant decrease, if you are looking for better image quality performance, then you can try to avoid shooting with a small aperture of F11 and below.
Overall, this lens has a solid enough image quality performance in the center and corners at the maximum aperture of F8, and we can safely shoot with wide aperture in daily shooting, and its image quality can meet the needs of various mainstream APS-C format sensor cameras.
Official MTF Graph:
002 Bokeh Test
We tested at a near-minimum focusing distance (approx. 0.55m). At F1.7, it produces a strong bokeh effect. The lens uses 9 aperture blades, and the spot near the center is rounded, with no bright edges and no chromatic dispersion issues. The spots near the corners are lemon-shaped due to aperture erosion. Closer inspection reveals a very slight "onion ring" phenomenon.
003 Vignetting test
Vignetting is noticeable at the maximum aperture of F1.7, improved at F2 and almost disappears at F4. Since vignetting is relatively easy to remove in post-production, there is no need to worry too much about it when shooting in everyday life.
004 Distortion Test
The lens has slight pincushion distortion at maximum aperture, which is not noticeable in actual shooting. Although the configuration file for this lens is already built into the ACR, the correction effect is not particularly noticeable.

After correction:
005 Dispersion Test
At such an affordable price, it also uses 4 low-dispersion lenses. At zoom-in, magnification dispersion is not noticeable at wide aperture, and axial dispersion out of focus is fairly slight. Considering the price, the dispersion control is really good, exceeding our expectations for this lens.
006 Respiratory Effect Test
The breathing effect of this lens is very mild, and it is very friendly for video shooting, and it is identified as "unable to breathe".
007 Autofocus test
This lens uses an STM focusing motor. Equipped with Fujifilm X-T5 for focusing test, its focusing response speed is relatively fast, and it also supports Fujifilm X-T5's face/eye recognition, so the focus can also follow the human eye when the person is running, and the noise during focusing is almost imperceptible, which will not affect the radio of video shooting.
008 Glare Ghost Test
This lens produces a noticeable flare in direct flashes, and slight ghosting is visible at certain angles, so we still need to avoid scenes with direct glare as much as possible.
009 Color Propensity Test
Use a photographic light to illuminate the environment, shoot the Deta color color card, shoot with Fujifilm X-T5's "Provia Standard" mode, compare it through the post-production software, and find that it deviates more from blue and green, and when paired with Fujifilm X-T5, the overall tone is cold.
Tips: Different hosts, lighting conditions, etc., will have different color tendencies, and the post-production comparison can only represent the results of the post-color correction process, not the actual shooting performance, and the results are for reference only.
Real-life experience
We had a hands-on experience with the Nikon Z fc and Fujifilm X-T5 respectively. Since it is equivalent to a golden portrait focal length of about 85mm, of course, it is used to pat the young lady.
When shooting bust portraits, the aperture of F1.7 provides a strong bokeh effect, effectively highlighting the subject of the portrait.
Its sharpness performance in real shots is also good enough, zooming in to see the details on the face, and the young lady's hair and eyelashes are also relatively clear.
Zoom in on the Portrait Eyes:
The 85mm equivalent is better for half-length portraits, but a little further away can actually get a full-body portrait perspective, and a wider aperture can still provide some bokeh ability at this time.
In addition to being used to shoot portraits, it is also more suitable for friends who are "socially afraid" like dogs, and the equivalent of 85mm medium telephoto often allows us to shoot without attracting the attention of passers-by. Its slight vignetting effect provides a bit of stylized atmosphere for the humanistic street sweeping picture.
The angle of view of the medium telephoto lens can also have a certain sense of compression, which can be used to shoot urban buildings. In actual shooting, we found that slight distortion of the lens did not have a noticeable effect on the frame.
It's also a good place to shoot close-up-style scenes, but we found the lens to be a little messy when facing such a complex background. Of course, the resolution is still excellent, and you can see details that aren't visible to the naked eye when zoomed in.
Details such as spider webs and shell textures that can only be seen after magnification:
When shooting on the edge of a potholed river, the small size greatly reduces the burden on our bodies. Cub thinks that this is also the advantage of the APS-C format camera, not only the body is relatively lighter, but there are also many lightweight lens options like this lens!
Review
We think that this lens has spent all the cost on the edge - the image quality performance is good enough, and the volume is also very light and portable, which is very suitable for students and enthusiasts who pursue the portability and cost-effectiveness of the lens.
Its Z-mount version also fills the gap in Nikon's APS-C format mirrorless lens group, which can be accessed by Nikon brothers who like to take portraits or sweep the streets.
Merit:
1. Cost-effective
2. Small and portable
3. The center and corner resolution performance is good, and the dispersion control is good
Shortcoming:
1. In the face of strong light, the glare is relatively obvious
