On April 17, Lin Guisen, head of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center of the Dehua County Forestry Bureau, told the Jimu News reporter that he had arrived at the scene to check and found that the wire mesh area reached 50 or 60 square meters, of which more than 30 square meters of wire mesh was dense. "It's not spiders that weave giant webs, it's inchworms, which are larvae of inchworms. This insect mainly feeds on the leaves of broad-leaved trees such as sweetgum trees, and usually sleeps during the day and comes out to feed at night, which can lead to the death of broad-leaved trees in the event of an outbreak. ”

Lin Guisen said that the inchworm is not an alien species, and it is more common in the local area, but weaving giant nets is indeed rare, and there are several sweetgum trees near the place of the incident, which is the cause of the infestation. However, the pest is relatively easy to control, and they have sprayed 1,000 grams of Bacillus thuringiensis for biological control.
