Year-round maintenance strategy for jasmine

Xiao Hao

Vertical jasmine, and our common jasmine is different, jasmine is a tree of the family Frangipani, weeping jasmine is a Lamiaceae Daqing plant, many flower friends see it with the word "jasmine", thinking that it will be as fragrant as jasmine, in fact, there is no fragrance of weeping jasmine. There are two common versions on the market, the Thai version and the Dutch version, the former has longer filaments than the latter, the amount of flowers is larger, and the shape is more beautiful, which is more favored by flower lovers. However, many flower friends are attracted by the beauty of the weeping jasmine, and it is a pity that they lose the buds, do not raise them well, do not bloom or even die inexplicably. I have sorted out my annual experience in the maintenance of silk jasmine and shared it with you, hoping to help and inspire you, and also raise a good state of full crown, filigree waterfall, and fairy spirit.

First of all, please enjoy my Thai version of the Silky Jasmine in full bloom, taken on January 6, 2024 (Picture 1).

The following is a detailed sharing of the year-round maintenance experience of pendulum jasmine.

In February 2023, a friend gave me a small seedling of weeping jasmine, which has a diameter of about 16 centimeters, which is equivalent to the size of 1 gallon, and has already bloomed. At that time, the temperature in Chengdu was only a few degrees to more than ten degrees, and I don't think it fell below 5 degrees Celsius, so it basically did not suffer from frost damage, so it was kept outdoors, but for the sake of safety, it was still placed in a location where the sun was exposed to the sun and the wind was avoided as much as possible (Figure 2).

After a week, about the beginning of March, I saw that it was still in good condition, and I could see that there were roots exposed from the bottom of the pot, and I knew that the root system was relatively full, so I changed it to a 25 cm diameter and 30 cm high Horen pot. It was kept in this pot until June 9 (Figure 3).

The soil used to change the pot is 10~30 size coarse peat of Pin's size, and fermented granular sheep manure, fermented and defatted bone meal, and Aolu 318S granular slow-release fertilizer are added as the base fertilizer, so even if there is no additional fertilization for three months on a business trip, there is a basic nutrient supply that does not affect the growth. Soon a few thick branches were pulled out, and the crown width was twice as large as before.

On June 15, I saw that the roots were already emerging from the bottom of the pot and knew that the roots were almost full, and I could change to a larger pot (Figure 4).

This time, it was replaced with a 35 cm diameter and 41 cm high Horen basin, which is equivalent to 9 gallons (Fig. 5).

Still continue to raise in the open air, Chengdu began to enter the summer, high temperature, exposure to the sun, watering once a day, sometimes back late watering is not timely, the leaves wilted, and after watering through the water, it is straight and stretched. Ten days and half a month, it will be diluted 1000 times with balanced fertilizer (Hua Duoduo No. 1) and watered once a month. When exposed to high temperatures, the new leaves become smaller and lighter in color, but they still grow vigorously, and they continue to sprout side branches from their thick branches (Figure 6).

In mid-October, when the temperature cooled down, it began to pull filaments from the top of each branch, and then changed the fertilizer to a high-phosphorus fertilizer (Hua Duoduo No. 2), which was also diluted 1000 times with water and watered once a week (Figure 7).

The filaments elongate day by day, and no matter the thickness of the branches, there are filaments on almost every branch, and after a rough count, there are seventy or eighty filaments. The weather is cool, so you don't need to water it every day, but when you see that the soil on the pot surface is white, you need to water it thoroughly, and the fertilizer is still high phosphorus once a week (Figure 8).

In November, when the lowest temperature dropped below 15°C, it was moved indoors to the sun. When the lowest indoor temperature is lower than 15 °C, turn on the heating at home, because it is a radiator, the ground is not hot, so it is no problem to put it directly on the ground, if it is floor heating, you have to raise it. The tray is used to better maintain the hygiene of the home, but there must be no stagnant water in the tray, otherwise it is easy to rot the roots (Figure 9).

In the heating room, the ventilation is not good, the watering can not be watered thoroughly, and when the soil on the surface of the pot is whitish or when half a finger is inserted into the soil without obvious moisture, it needs to be watered, taking my 9-gallon basin as an example, about 4 liters of watering, after a few minutes of watering, observe whether there is water in the tray, and pour it out if there is water. If it is connected to tap water, put it indoors a day in advance, and wait until it is consistent with the room temperature before using it. Fertilization is still high in phosphorus once a week. It is indoors, and it can be exposed to the sun when it is out, but the sunlight comes from one side, and in order for it to grow evenly and not deviate from the crown, the pot is rotated 180 degrees every three forks.

The filaments gradually elongate, the buds become more and more numerous, and the branches droop more and more in all directions, and the crown width becomes larger and larger, and finally the height is 1.8 meters, and the crown width is almost 1.8 meters. The bulging white buds, glittering like light bulbs, gradually take on the beauty of the beaded curtain (Fig. 10).

Finally, on December 31, 2023, the first flower bloomed, dancing like a white butterfly, with a light and graceful posture (Figure 11).

On January 6, 2024, as if pressing the fast-forward button, the buds bloomed more and more, showing the feeling of a waterfall, and when the doors and windows were opened and closed, the air flow drove the filaments to sway, and the strings and white butterflies seemed to fly, the bead curtain hung down, and the fairy spirit fluttered, reaching the most beautiful appearance at this time. At this time, the fertilization should be changed to balanced fertilizer, and the frequency can be appropriately reduced, once every ten days and half a month (Fig. 12).

Wait until most of the flowers have withered, you can prune off the filaments, at this time you can prune the whole plant, the dead branches, the weak branches at the bottom, the branches that are crowded in the middle and can't get the sun, and the branches that are too long to affect the plant shape, you can also cut all the branches short, so that the whole crown width is more round and full. Wait until the minimum outdoor temperature rises to more than 5°C, and then move out for normal maintenance.
